We have purchased around 150 of these and over three years we have had about 25 of those fail. The most common symptom is loss of network connectivity and loss of USB hub functionality. I think the network adapter is connected internally to the usb hub because they always fail at the same time. Recently we have been replacing the cable when we get a failure report. The cables are replaceable if you take it apart. We replace them with 1.5 meter TB3 cables from mono price. I suspect all the failures were just the cable.
Our office of 250+ used these and collectively never ran into any "reliability issues". They work as advertised and charged all our Ultrabooks just fine, and also was extremely convenient as a docking station for multiple monitors and accessories. I have no idea where you got the notion that these docks have a notorious reputation, but I can confirm from real use case in a busy office setting that these work fine
Note this has no HDMI. Only display port and VGA and USB.

It can. But this thing is notoriously unreliable. Just buy a used one from eBay if you want to play with it.

Oh, probably 60w for non hp laptops and 120w for compatible hp laptops

Great product except for when you idle out sometimes you have to reconnect and let the monitors turn back on

Pro tip for docks, if you're having problems, make sure the firmware is up to date. when I first started using them I didn't know you had to download a utility to update.

I've had this for the last 4-ish years. Great dock, but the fan goes bad over time and gets loud. I ended replacing the fan myself off ebay and it's been kicking for the past year.

For those that care: This powers my Dell XPS 13 just fine since that only needs about 45W.

Our company also uses these, and my unit has been reliable over the last 4 years -- 3 of which working from home after Covid. Having said that, I do know of one on our team that did need to get his replaced but we are a large team.

Display Port > HDMI, but yeah if all you have is HDMI on your display, you may need an adapter.

This supports both TB and non-TB USB-C devices. Since it has active cooling, is the fan noise annoying or acceptable?

Could use the thunderbolt port in the back for a type c to hdmi cable? I'm not saying I'd recommend it. I'm just curious if it would work. Thanks

Fan was quiet initially and slowly started getting noisy over the years. I ended up having replace mine after about 4 years. The issue is that the fans keeps going even if the display is off sometimes, which works against its lifespan.

Certainly can, I do that with mine. I have used these G2 hubs for the last four years from work and they have been solid.
