At the start of the pandemic I assembled a Huffy youth bike what included a shifter. Out of the box the shifter was not adjusted. The brake pads were also poorly aligned. I got all of that sorted out and the bike has since been trouble free. I suspect most of the issues with these cheep bikes is a combination of poor/no factory adjustment + buyers who don't know better. In general a more bike minded person is likely to skip to something higher end. The sunset of buyers who can adjust these to work and want to save the money is probably low hence a higher complaint rate. If you aren't the sort who can tune a bike then I would be cautious when buying.

I read the negative reviews, beyond the hard seat and shipping issues the one that really matters is how close the pedals are to the front wheel, which you can see in the picture. Lots of complaints about hitting your foot while steering… that's a no go lol.

Many complaints are loose seat, handlebars, gears not working, etc. When purchasing a bike, you should always check that everything is tight and adjusted, before riding. At one time, bikes had a warning tag on them to do just that. I bet the instructions still tell you to do so. But who reads them, right?
in 2021, when covid was on, and shortages going, I bought the 29" Kent. I have had good luck with it, but I don't ride everyday. I paid $155 at the time,(previously it had been $138). I always check everything over, before riding. I swapped handlebars with some I had, that are a little higher.
Like everything else the price has risen, now $198. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Kent-2.../881210303

I've the same exact bike for a little over a year and my kid is very happy with it. As my kids have grown, I have bought at least 6 bikes from Walmart over the last decade, the likes of Huffy, Kent, and Hyper. They all were picked up in-store, and were assembled free by Walmart staff. None had any mechanical issue. Each one lasted a bunch of years until my kids outgrew them, and were passed on to friends or neighbors who then used it for years. Inexpensive bikes, perfect for recreational purpose like riding in parks, or around the community. If you're using it for daily commute, or more rigorous purpose, spend more and get something more dependable.

I bought a 24" and two 26" for my kids in the last week. Just spent an afternoon assembling my daughter's, realizing the rear derailleur was bent beyond repair, returning, received my son's bike from FedEx, realized the package was damaged through to the bike, returned his, then discovered there are none in stock anywhere in the Detroit metro area after driving to 4 stores. One out of three that I bought were worth riding, and it was the only one that I got pre-assembled. My advice, don't buy one that's still in the box.

Bought one for my cousin. The handle bar set screw "locking nut" is cast steel. Be careful tightening it. I stripped mine trying to adjust the handle bar to be in line with the front wheel. I fixed it by welding a nut with the appropriate threads on it. Everything else seemed okay for such a cheap bike.

This. The metal in these bikes components is very soft. They make be ok for casual use. Otherwise get an older Giant, Trek, Specialized, etc off Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for $50 - $100 and you'll have a far better bike.
Huffy is utter garbage. Save up for a better bike. Dicks often has deals on decent quality diamondbacks for around $250. Will last you for years.
Or if you cant save up (many might need it for work or something), Facebook marketplace is a good place get bikes in brands like Trek, second hand but cheap. Got one with brand new tires for $40 a few months back.

second hand usually with rusted chains sitting outside not cared for. the reason for selling. more of someone elses headache.

You'd be surprised. One I got was owned by an elderly biking enthusiast (could tell by the multiple higher end bikes he had in his garage and the fact that he was wearing those skintight bikers suit or whatever) and was in basically pristine condition apart from a few scuffs on the body. Easy to see from pictures or even ask sellers prior if anything is rusted. It's an older model, but you could tell it was kept in a garage and well cared for.
