Seriously comparing a g-shock to a smartphone/watch? These are durable cost much less and I bet by the time I change a battery you've upgraded your obsolete phone and watch twice for the newer models.
Legit. I own ball, hamilton watches. But gshock are my go to daily. These watches are indestructible.if any one is a clumsy person like me - go with the shock. Can't go wrong
If you don't get why people like G-shocks, then it's not a product for you. Don't buy it and move on. Different products for different people.

I have a G-shock and smartwatch, and much prefer the G-shock for everyday wear. I don't really use the wrist features of a smartwatch much, and the G-shock has many other advantages.

Exactly. I have a G-Shock and an Apple Watch. I wear the G-Shock everyday. The only time I take it off is when I put on my Apple Watch to track my workouts. They serve different purposes, but I'd give up my Apple Watch before giving up my G-Shock.

How is this one for 61 year old eyes without my readers on? I have 2 Octagons I love but my digital is a wee bit hard to read. Not worried about the date or other stuff.

I have a Atomic Solar G-Shock I got nearly 20 yrs ago. Still looks and works like new, same battery. I recently got an Amazfit GTR3 Pro smartwatch. I love the smartwatch too, so much so, I have it on 24/7 except to shower and charge it. Only needs charging weekly, so not too bad. My G-Shock sits on a window ledge to stay charged, but I rarely wear it now. Still love it though.

If Casio ever makes a solar G-Shock smartwatch, fully loaded with GPS, fitness tracking, etc... I'm all in.

You're right. That is how the technology and innovation works.

But you go on ahead with that beeper and pay phone. Keep hand cranking that Ford's Model T! VHS Is better than DVD!

LMAO
That's how capitalism works. I had a smartwatch, and it was annoying to charge. The extra features don't make a difference. You're staring at your watch as much as you would your phone. For health tracking it can be neat, but you're not fit enough for it to really matter.

You're right that smartwatch charging isn't the problem some people make it out to be, but there's still plenty of market for digital non-smart watches that are practically indestructible, look after themselves for decades, and are inexpensive to boot
Smartwatches have planned obsolescence. Smartwatches typically have to be charged every few days (kind of annoying). Before people start saying you can charge your phone every night with your phone, then what is the point of sleep tracking on the smartwatch.

I've used the mibands (amazing 20+ day battery life) but it looks tacky vs a real watch.

So until we can get at least a few weeks (would love a month) battery life on a smartwatch that looks halfway decent, then regular watches still have their place.

Hopefully soon.

Their GM2100s are sexy and have bluetooth connectivity, but it seems to still be in its infancy.

Back in the days, the dumb folks were unwilling to let go of the Ford Model T, VHS and pagers...let that sink in.

If you charge your phone, charging your watch isn't an issue. The folks shilling for old watches that are unitaskers are just trying to keep their market alive so they have jobs. You'll hear these people spout nonsense like:

"I can dive with my watch 200m deep...though I never dive, but I'd rather know that I can dive 200m, than be able to see my emails, text, weather, make calls, with a smartphone!"

Applause

I have a rolex, but I rarely if ever wear that old tech as it is pretty much useless. I'd rather not have to pull out my smartphone to check my texts, calls or emails, when I can quickly check my smartwatch in a business meeting.
I don't understand why someone who hates analog watches so much would bother to click on a deal for a G-Shock and spend so much time replying to and insulting other commenters, trying to convince everyone to throw their old watches in the garbage or they are obviously Luddites/morons?

I have a G-Shock GA100-1A1 (similar to this SD), Swiss, Italian, and Japanese watches, along with a Samsung Galaxy watch, but prefer the look and durability of my analog/mechanical watches. I know Apple and Samsung smartwatches can cost upwards of $500-700, but they still look cheap, fragile, and tacky to me. I'll wear my Galaxy or Garmin watches when working out, but the rest of the time I prefer traditional watches; I don't think that makes me a flat-earther. Different strokes for different folks.

To stay on topic, I think these G-Shocks are hard to beat for durability, as many in the armed services who sport them do too, and this price is a great deal.

Do NOT get a negative display watch for easy readability. Yes this also has hands but almost all negative comments on every shock with a negative display is that it's hard to read. I don't mind the negative display personally but if your already concerned about readability I wouldn't recommend it.

I wish Casio would do a smart G-Shock right. I got the amazfit Trex (v1) and like it for the battery and style, but it only looks like a G-Shock to the uninformed at a distance. Trex is advertised as rugged, but it's hard to compare to my 1980's era G-Shock even and I can tell it will probably die after 5 years or so

Dead technology.

You charge your smartphone, you can charge your smartwatch.
Mature vs immature technology Smilie

You can also charge your EV during a road trip.... but i think ill just fill up my hybrid in a couple mins & change out the coin cell battery on a quartz watch with a sh*tty dollar screwdriver set and possibly get another 2 years of "maintenance free" runtime outta it.

Not hating on a smartwatch. Just waiting on a battery tech breakthrough since it seems most of the tech companies have squeezed every nanometer of cpu efficiency in this form factor. Shillin 300-500 for an apple watch every 3 years or even an 80 dollar battery replacement is ridiculous.

If you want to do any kind of fitness tracking and want a rugged smart watch get a Garmin instinct. On sale they are around $100. If you don't use the GPS (for actual tracing of running and cycling) they will last a week and charge in 15-20 min. Have NO need for my G-Shock. Beat the hell out of the Garmin. Have "nicer" watches for work and going out, but daily is the Garmin.

Check out their models with MIPs displays. I've had the GBD200 for about a year now and the display is nice and large and easy to read in direct sunlight unlike a lot of digital LCDs. One of the display settings puts the time in extra large font so it takes up the whole face.

I just changed the battery for the first time today — it's held up really well.

Purchased this watch in Oct 2013 from Amazon for $102. Has held up great, have only changed the battery once. There are a few downsides to the watch so I don't wear it much anymore
1) much larger in person than photos, feels a bit clunky on the wrist
2) backlight is utterly useless
3) buttons are flush with the watch body, can be difficult to press in
