IDK, sinad is pretty weak given its price. yea it has bunch of inputs and functions, seldom used in modern audiophile setups which prioritizes signal purity. Sinad dips to trash tier when you use the eq and built in functions, might as well do it on the host device end.

That $80 fosi can get within 3db of this amp in its purity mode, which cancels out all its other functions, so, idk, we're entering the golden era of Chi-Fi.

You guys might not remember but we used to $hit on all the japanese amps/ brands before they overwhelmed american/ british products both in quality and price.

I think you may be stretching thigs too far by comparing this amp to the fosi. Not that chi-fi usually get a better bang for the buck, but I feel these are just too far apart. However I do feel yamaha is not the best option when in comes to audiophile stereo amps. Even with less power, I would pick the Cambridge Audio that was recently on sale for $600 over this.

I'll chime in and say those $80 fosi amps are good for their price but those listed numbers are peak momentary numbers at 4ohms that cant be sustained. Also do a side by side listen test vs those fosi amps. I dont have golden ears, I have tinnitus, but the difference was very noticeable between the $70 fosi amp and the STR-DH190. The fosi was rated for more watts but in reality only put out about 35wpc vs the actual 100wpc of the Sony.

So are the specs on this amp. Passive heatsinks even very large ones on this unit can only dissipate continuous 30-40ish watt. Those tiny ones on the fosi can do 5-10 watts continuous.

The point though is, you'll never hit anywhere close to that number with real content. For home use, you're already at deafening at 10 watts. laugh out loud

I've measured the loudest possible transients in real musical content, such as cannon sounds, guess what, they don't produce a single bump in electricity use on the meter.

Out side of transients, Sustained bass in electronic music uses the most power, but this hardly matters because you'll have to send it to a dedicated Sub anyway as non-exotic towers will cut it out.

So in every realistic way, THIS amp, will be used, it does not provide anything special over the $80 fosi. except the 3-4db of sinad in purity mode.

But there are other amps that do even more sinad-peen for the same price if that's what you're after.

For example, the new Topping Discrete LA 90 Smilie 120 sinad, 220watts in monoblock mode $800

why are we talking about cheap chip amps? is this Reddit?

You're like the Casio guy in a Omega thread telling folks to buy a more practical watch.

what is it with Yamaha and not liking to use toroidal power supplies?
They magically found a way to tame stray magnetic fields?

prior posters sound like they're quoting sites in spec sheets but have never actually heard the amplifier I personally used to own this amplifier and it is excellent. It is also very rarely discounted so if you are in the market for an amplifier in this range I'd jump on this. In my opinion the DAC was the weakest part of it and I used an external DAC. Personally I am currently using a vintage Sansui au d11 ii but if I was going to be using a modern amplifier I think it would be this one. And it's from Amazon so there's no risk if you don't like it just return it.

Great unit. I own one, but save yourself some $$ and get the a-s701. It's identical except for the USB port. What I didn't know is the USB port is ONLY good for playing music from a connected pc using yamaha's software.

I stream from my phone via chromecast audio so that feature of the a-s801 was irrelevant. Specs list a better DAC for the 801, but it's only used for the USB channel. All other inputs use the same DAC as the 701.

I keep mine in a closed door entertainment center and after several house of music it's barely warm. Sounds great with my Polk 705's and 2x SVS sb1000s. Bass-heads should know the sub-out is locked at 120hz.

Own a lot of amps and receivers. I love Yamaha stereo and surround sound amps. You buy this for the sound, not for features. If you want more features get the R-N803. But if you have a streamer you can hook up to it, look into the Wiim Pro and you're set. I have the R-N803 and it sounds sublime with every speaker I have used with it. B&W CM6 S2, Paradigm Prestige 15B, Martin Logan Motion 35xt. I use a sub as well with it and the bookshelf sub combo works amazing. Been using mine for a couple of years now.

I own this amp - it's a great amp with a built in DAC - I use it for my ns1000m speakers πŸ”Š they sound the best in modern era - crystal clear highs and lows and zero distortion ever - throw out your old and outdated amps and buy this - one ☝️ simple solution for a great stereo amp finally from Yamaha
