Yes, egg shells are extremely porous. It allows for carbon dioxide to escape and fresh air to get in.

Ya got this for same price from amazon last week. First use eggs did not come out hard boiled even when i used the exact water level so next time added more water and that fixed it.
There you go, hard boiled eggs without any extra gadgets.
