Hi Marcus, this is what I've been told twice by Lenovo sales personnel.
If this unit were not open box, I think I'd likely buy it myself.
I was told this today and a cynic might say that the salesman was saying that solely because he wanted to up-sell me on something more expensive.
He did in fact get me a quote in the end for the X1 Carbon 11th Gen for $1445.
(And I just called again and the 3rd salesman thinks outlet laptops are open box too.)
Also something curious i should mention: This exact same model is also being
sold in the Lenovo Ebay store, but there it is refurbished.
This exact model isn't listed on PSREF.lenovo.com or on pcsupport.lenovo.com.
I purchased an thinkbook from outlet which was delivered last week.
They will ship with signature required next day delivery so be aware of that. I was not home so UPS took it back to their hub and then delivered it to the store right across my apartment next day for pick up. BS !
Second, mine looked new in box and had everything wrapped up like factory. No smudges or anything, everything wrapped in plastics, foam etc.
My warranty started the date of order instead of delivery date.
I checked battery date and it was one year old, so if you select new then you would be getting old stock and not open box.
I cannot say much about refurbished.
And use amex 100 cashback on 500. Mine was reflect in statement about a week after order.

Another salesman just told me that Outlet laptops are the ones that
were returned, checked out fine, were then wiped and repackaged as new.

someone in reddit posted outlet units are user configured but mis-ordered, returned without accepting, duplicate orders, etc, etc. I don't think they would be able to sell open box units as new. Perhaps thats what refur would mean as they sell both new and refurb in outlet.
Yes. I have the same X13 Gen 2 but with half the RAM, and I got it for $650, which in my opinion was a very good deal then. I would buy this if I needed another laptop now.
@holly_molly
I was also told that in the past as well, maybe two years ago.
So we have two narratives from the lenovo salespeople.
I would add that one time I bought an Ideapad from Staples and it was clearly a returned item. The box was sealed but the plastic was barely on the unit and the paperwork was crumpled. I'd say avoid buying from Staples.
@stevenxx
Makes sense but I have seen retail stores selling "B grade" new technology before. Maybe Lenovo decided to do the same? The difference is, if Staples resells a returned laptop as new, it's the manufacturer who bears the burden if it is defective. If Lenovo resells a returned laptop as new, they bear the burden themselves.
BestBuy (the Macbook Pro I bought there ended up needing extensive warranty repairs)
How do I return?
We are happy to process returns free of shipping or restocking fees from the date of the invoice as follows:
Lenovo.com – 30 calendar days.
Lenovo Outlet – 14 calendar days.
LenovoPRO – 45 calendar days.
Motorola – 14 calendar days.
Hi op, may i ask how did you find those listings? It doesn't show up when entering from the outlet front page and browse through all their listings. Thanks!
I once bought from woot (an Amazon subsidiary) that Lenovo marketed as "new", but there were two layer of Lenovo anti-tempering seals. The outer layer was intact but the inner layer was broken with dust on it. I would be cautious with anything that Lenovo said was "new".
I bought a Thinkpad Carbon X1 Yoga from the outlet store before. It was brand new and sealed. Difference was that it wasn't in a retail box - most likely it was destined for one of their business clients, but their client cancelled some orders. At our office, when we buy a pallet of Dell laptops for future employees's needs, the laptops come in generic brown boxes.
