If this unit were not open box, I think I'd likely buy it myself.
I was told this today and a cynic might say that the salesman was saying that solely because he wanted to up-sell me on something more expensive.
He did in fact get me a quote in the end for the X1 Carbon 11th Gen for $1445.
(And I just called again and the 3rd salesman thinks outlet laptops are open box too.)
Also something curious i should mention: This exact same model is also being
sold in the Lenovo Ebay store, but there it is refurbished.
This exact model isn't listed on PSREF.lenovo.com or on pcsupport.lenovo.com.
They will ship with signature required next day delivery so be aware of that. I was not home so UPS took it back to their hub and then delivered it to the store right across my apartment next day for pick up. BS !
Second, mine looked new in box and had everything wrapped up like factory. No smudges or anything, everything wrapped in plastics, foam etc.
My warranty started the date of order instead of delivery date.
I checked battery date and it was one year old, so if you select new then you would be getting old stock and not open box.
I cannot say much about refurbished.
And use amex 100 cashback on 500. Mine was reflect in statement about a week after order.

I was also told that in the past as well, maybe two years ago.
So we have two narratives from the lenovo salespeople.
I would add that one time I bought an Ideapad from Staples and it was clearly a returned item. The box was sealed but the plastic was barely on the unit and the paperwork was crumpled. I'd say avoid buying from Staples.
@stevenxx
Makes sense but I have seen retail stores selling "B grade" new technology before. Maybe Lenovo decided to do the same? The difference is, if Staples resells a returned laptop as new, it's the manufacturer who bears the burden if it is defective. If Lenovo resells a returned laptop as new, they bear the burden themselves.
How do I return?
We are happy to process returns free of shipping or restocking fees from the date of the invoice as follows:
Lenovo.com – 30 calendar days.
Lenovo Outlet – 14 calendar days.
LenovoPRO – 45 calendar days.
Motorola – 14 calendar days.
