So far so good, it supports "Apps Only" mode, which the old one didn't.
What exactly is that?

As someone stated above custom launcher for these is the way to go. Easy to remove any bloat aps as well.
Is there a step by step for this?

That's because it's Google TV now. Custom launchers is better than apps only mode though because you need to exit app mode to get into the play store and there's still a huge ad in the back. Not to mention whatever else they're doing in the background.

Got one from my local Walmart on Monday. $19.98+tax. I have not got a chance to plug it in but it looks very similar to last gen model. This has slightly upgraded processor that can handle AV1 codec. Hopefully that would minimize the heat issue others have reported.
For hardware enthusiasts, last gen sit below Fire TV stick 4k Max. So at least on paper it performs better than GC w/Google TV and Fire TV stick 4k

Does anyone know if this supports TV-led Dolby Vision?

My Fire Stick max does not and I need something that does.

As someone that owns 2 of the og 4k onn boxes (that are still going strong btw), I'd also like to know what's been upgraded

....while I do still prefer the firetv, these are easily the best deal in streaming boxes imho
Slightly better Processor that can handle AV1 codec. Still no Dolby vision or Atmos support.

Actually, Fire TV stick supports Dolby Vision and Atmos. Your TV unit has to support this format and you should be playing DV content from Netflix or Disney.
If you have Samsung TV, then it would only Support HDR10 or later depending upon how latest your TV unit is

Ok. Maybe I'm a newbie. Software wise, what is the difference between this and nvidia shield? I'm sure based on price, nvidia shield has the hardware part easily beat out

wifi isn't that great.
I had buffering problems at my TV farthest away from router ; replaced it with Roku - no more buffering issues

I bought 5 at my local Walmart and it said it wasn't available or sold online. They probably had 20ish in stock.
Why do you need 5?

Have the one that's basically a copy of the Chrome cast w Google TV and never had an issue. Think it's the same chip as that one. Smooth and zero connection issues, and has gotten updates consistently . *shrugs*.

TLDR, its for budget conscious folks who wants 4k streaming at cheapest possible price.

Long version: Same difference that Samsung Galaxy series has when compared to its A series phone. Google TV software is latest when it comes to Google TV platform but not everything is about software here. Onn Google TV has basic hardware just to get the job done. It does not support advanced HDR formats like DV, HDR10+ or audio codecs like Atmos. That is just to name a few. Limited memory, no expansion slots or connectivity ports are other key things that is missing from this TV box.

I think the device is good for its price point vs the competitors.
