It's easy for the misinformed to lump all these media boxes into one basket.
for ease of understanding, lets break these into two camps:
1. ANDROID TV boxes: as they're commonly referred to, sold by the hundreds on Amazon, Ebay, ect...= no name boxes with cellphone internals and custom GUI <-----where you're going to find hacked firmware. LTT tells you to stay away from this type.
2. GOOGLE TV, sometimes even found built in to television brands. NVidia Shield TV, Xiaomi Mi Box, this ONN media player, and a very few other = are licensed, they run actual Google Tv interface and apps are upgraded via the Play Store. Firmware also upgradable, unlike the former. Chances of running into spyware? not impossible, but often less likely.

What are you basing your opinion on? How many actual "ANDROID TV" boxes do you know of offers this kind of experience/performance for $20?
https://androidpctv.com/amlogic-s...mparative/ [androidpctv.com]
the Geekbench 4 benchmark shows it is actually slower than the S905Y2 used in the previous
gen. The 3DMark and PCmark are similar.
So, other than the AV1 decoding, the performance looks like a little step backward. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I did buy a second one and that one had restart issues, might be the overheating problem people mentioned before. Its been in a drawer gathering dust since then. I might open it up and put a thermal pad on it and see if that fixes it.
Still with that, I think its 100 percent worth the $20. Way easier to use than a Firestick 4k, and if it has problems, just exchange it at Walmart.
Does the volume work for Bluetooth devices, like the previous model? My guess is that Google TV might not support that like Android TV, did in the previous model. Hopefully I'm wrong about that.
About volume control, you can control TV unit volume from Onn remote if you are asking that. Onn remote should also support and devices that is connected via TV HDMI and that support HDMI-CEC.

Do you have TV that supports Dolby Vision and Atmos?
One thing you can be sure of is that it is cheap, and no other streaming device can beat that as of today.

Use rechargeable batteries over the included batteries.
My remotes stopped working as they kept disconnecting from the boxes even though they had plenty of juice left. Somehow the reagent / reactant in batteries didn't flow right causing disconnects after using the included batteries for several months. Problem resolved with Eneloop batteries.
