I brought my son/daughter and several of their friends (8-12 year olds) to watch it. They absolutely loved it and played Mario games on their Nintendo Switches as soon as we got back home! It was a good time!

Agreed. It was very unfortunate, as a lifelong mario fan. My two younger (gamer) sons were "meh." about it as well. Disappointing but not totally unexpected. And Avatar? yeesh..
