I bought an MFC-L5700DW new on Amazon for $279 in 2019. My wife prints between 20 to 300 pages or more every week for work. We replaced the drum one time and only use Brother ink.
Never had a single issue with it. Not even one paper jam that I'm aware of.
UPDATE: I just checked the page counter. It's 88,493. My 20 to 300 page per week estimate is a little on the low side. It would average to over 400 pages per week.
You may want to download the latest drivers; Brother shows the latest version is dated March 2023. I have a 2685DW and it works great with Windows 10. Here's link for driver download for your 2280DW:
I've had an HL-2280DW for about 10 years. Still works great.Similar to this one https://www.brother-usa.com/products/RHLL2390DW
Only complaint is driver/software setup could be easier on a PC. From the phone it just works.

Thanks. I think I'm using those already and also the win 11 drivers for my laptop. I guess I was thinking about when I recently changed routers and how difficult it was to get the printer to work on the new network. Setup 'wizard' makes you push arrow keys through the entire alphabet for each character.

Ahh yes I've been there; that's a gripe that a lot of printer brands suffer from due to the limitations of the user interface. I run multiple printers and each is connected via USB to a specific desktop; that gives me full functionality from each and no wireless setup hassles.

Is the Brother pushibg firmware updates forcing use of their $$$$ toner still going on?
To my knowledge, yes, however that issue can be sidestepped in two ways:
1. Buy a printer that uses the older chipless TN630/TN660 cartridges instead of the newer chipped TN730/TN760 cartridges.
2. In your printer's settings, manually disable firmware updates. This should not be necessary unless your printer is directly connected to the internet. I don't believe that firmware updates can install via a USB connection to a desktop or laptop.

Any recommendations for a good color laser printer that uses a generic toner?
