The trick behind it? It simply has far more pleats and therefore more surface area, which allows for more, filtered air to pass through at any given moment. The 1900 filters have been tested on YouTube by HVAC technicians and even ProjectFarm. I encourage anyone reading this to see for themselves. Hopefully the industry trends towards increasing pleat count in the future.
I have used MERV 11 filters for years - they do a great job - but most important their performance is very, very close to MERV 12.
But there is an important difference: MERV 12 generates higher resistance created by the added filtration. In older homes the duct work and air handler can't handle the increased pressure on the fan and a/c - and it can damage your system.
Bottom line, check with your AC folk who know your system before going above MERV 11.
