For anyone concerned about higher filtration damaging HVAC systems, I'd recommend looking into the Filtrete 1900 series. It manages to achieve a very high degree of filtration (MERV 13!) yet it is one of the least restrictive filters out there.

The trick behind it? It simply has far more pleats and therefore more surface area, which allows for more, filtered air to pass through at any given moment. The 1900 filters have been tested on YouTube by HVAC technicians and even ProjectFarm. I encourage anyone reading this to see for themselves. Hopefully the industry trends towards increasing pleat count in the future.

Important fact I learned two years ago:

I have used MERV 11 filters for years - they do a great job - but most important their performance is very, very close to MERV 12.

But there is an important difference: MERV 12 generates higher resistance created by the added filtration. In older homes the duct work and air handler can't handle the increased pressure on the fan and a/c - and it can damage your system.

Bottom line, check with your AC folk who know your system before going above MERV 11.

I agree with what you say but would say check above a MERV 8 instead of 11 if an older home. Some older homes weren't originally sized to have cooling and many of those homes have the duct sized for heat only. If you live in a dry state where the home had a swamp cooler originally this will almost always apply. You can get away with adding cooling in most cases but air flow becomes a much bigger concern than newer homes and the standard 3 months out of a 1" pleated filter may be too long if using a MERV 11. Personally I use a MERV 8 and use HEPA air purifiers in bedrooms during allergy season. Each home and situation will obviously vary greatly.

These 20x20x1 filters are perfect for the DIY box fan air cleaners. I have two running right now.

Just bought the Rheem merv8 home Depot deal last week for $20 for 12 filters. I ended up ordering 180 filters for $300. Might be a bit overkill but at 1.66 each I couldn't pass it up for 16x25 size
