So I was going to suggest that someone buy a OBI200 because they work well and are free but when I visited the JungleShopping Site to find one they weren't selling them. I decided to check Polycom because they bought them and the devices aren't to be found. Eventually I went to obitalk.com and saw a notice that the devices are no longer being sold and that support will end in December 2023 and maybe there is a possibility they will continue working for some unknown and undisclosed period of time. Yeah thats just sketchy to not send out notices to users. At least I didn't get one.
ANYWAY I do have a MagicJack from many years back. Not sure it works but I went to their site to look for prices
MagicJack is having an Earth Day Sale $35 for the device and 1 year of service. After that 1 year of service is $43 and 3 years of service is $109. You also get an App to use with the device.
OOMA is also having an Earth Day Sale of up to $50 off their devices. Up To meaning only one of their more expensive devices has that discount but you can get.
The OOMA TELO for $79.99 from their site or for $69.99 from Best Buy.
And for the OBI200 users
Although the device might stop working with Google Voice it may continue to work with other providers if that provider does not make changes to their use after Dec 2023. This can happen if the provider changes their login method or something else that requires a Firmware Update for the Hardware.
And if and when the OBI200 device does stop working you will still be able to receive and make calls using the Google Voice App or Web Options.
But you should make sure that you have all of your contacts updated now so that you can contact them using your cell phone number and your google voice number just in case you have a situation during the transition.
ObiTalk was purchased by Polycom who was then purchased by HP
The ObiTalk Website says
December 18th, 2021
Important notice to OBiTALK customers
Summary: OBi200, OBi202 and OBi212 have entered the End of Life phase with the following key milestones:
End of Sale date is December 18, 2021 (as supplies last)
End of Engineering Support is December 18, 2023.
End of Service date is December 18, 2023.
Wish you guys all the best. I am still not sure about my path from here. But if the devices stop working you can still use the Google Voice App as long as it is available.

Just FYI OP is saying end of support for Obihai only. Ooma is completely unrelated to Poly (which was bought by HP).

OBi200, OBi202 and OBi212 devices may continue to work after the end of service date, but they will not be able to get added to the Google Voice service after December 18, 2023. OBi200, OBi202 and OBi212 devices registered prior to the End of Engineering Support date won't be able to be provisioned via OBiTALK after the December 18, 2023 and can only be managed and provisioned locally (manually).

we'll probably just forward the callcentric and google voice numbers
to various family member's cellphone.
* for my 80 something great uncle, i'll get him an ooma later this year.
he has a cellphone too, but is too tech adverse to use it.
btw, anyone reading this - if your obi200 seems dead already there was
a major security update that may only work if you factory reset the box
and set it up from scratch - it's what we had to do - this past winter.
* if i confirm from first hand use that ooma works with our fax machine
then i may get a second one for my house, cause obi200 was useless
even fiber-isp ethernet wired and down at a 4800 baud handshake.
From the ObiTalk website there will be no more support for the device after December 2023. Its not that they are just stopping Google Voice support. But Google Voice is what most people use them for because its free.
So that is the main problem.
I think its an end to an era .. just like Free Cellphone Service died.
I think Telecommunication companies are having economic problems because they all went out and bought CableTV or Dish or Streaming so they could become content providers and now consumers are canceling paid content providers because it just costs too much and no one is watching cable anymore. Crap I got a TV antenna and I get over 100 stations free for now. Eventually that will end when too many people catch on.
I think Jumping from a OBI200 to a Ooma or MagicJack is going to end up like jumping from RingPlus to FreedomPop. its just going to be a temporary fix. Might last a few more years but eventually its going to get eaten up and shut down.

Does this mean Google voice will cease to work on OBI20x devices post December 2023?

November should be considered your last month of dependable regular service
it has not been said that it will stop immediately yet
but it will stop at that point or sometime in the near future.
Now would be the time to start looking for an alternative
also it has not been said that google voice will stop working however they seem to be moving to a paid service. If Google changes anything then the OBI200 will stop working..
but you will still be able to use the google voice app on your cellphone or web browser.
