Depends on your needs. For this price it'd be hard to put together a comparable setup to this including a quality monitor, decent keyboard, mouse/track pad, respectable webcam and mic and speakers. This has it all in a very attractive package. Very slick.
Most likely this price is because M2 iMacs are imminent.

Hilarious to read through all the naysayer comments on the 2021 iMac.

Please, if you will, humor us all and put together a package for $1,000 that meets or beats this unit's 8 core CPU / GPU Passmark scores, SSD read/write speeds, 4.5k 100% P3 color space monitor at 218 ppi and 500 nits, WiFi speed of 760 MBit/s, two (2) Thunderbolt 3's at 40Gbps, two (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2's at 10Gbps, a 1080P webcam and microphones of this quality, and a six (6) speaker sound system that is equally as superb.

Also, don't forget the cost of a keyboard with fingerprint login and a mouse capable of multi touch input.

We will all be waiting for the cost of the i7 system or better it will take to beat this iMac at $1,000. You can try, but if you can't put the system together right here right now, well, then you simply live in a world where measurable objective criteria are meaningless.

Waiting endlessly for a link to something even marginally better in all of these metrics at $1,000 or less.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be no requirement that it be less than 10lbs or 1/2 inch thick like the iMac.

Good luck!

I just feel like you're better off with a Mac mini M1 (or 2) and an external monitor (or 2).

So that leaves no one posting anything because we're not allowed to say why it isn't a deal for some people? What exactly did you come here hoping to read if the merit of the iMac is not the topic?

Here's a question not (directly) about merit -- why do you think Costco is selling these at almost $500 off? Unpopular colors (notice blue and silver are not on sale)? Base model just not selling and there's a bunch of inventory Apple wants to clear?
Hard to know for sure as Apple doesn't divulge sales numbers by unit. But a reported 40% drop in overall Mac sales probably is a significant factor. Not that they were alone in the rather bleak PC market. They were a victim of their own success it seems as well with the M1, as most people who wanted Apple silicon sure has gotten one by now.

Ridiculous deal. Wanted blue but for $500 more off, no brainer. Perfect setup for spare bedroom and young daughter to start to get familiar with Mac. Bigger screen would have been nice but the thin, sleek design with built in everything at this price point is untouchable. Thanks OP
Yellow is golden! A masterpiece computer in every respect.

This unit is one up from the base model, and significantly faster under heavy load. Never throttles down.

Maybe, but the iMac does come with a very nice (albeit undersized) monitor….
Which is bound to the internal computer and cannot ever be used with anything else. SSD failed? Out goes the whole thing!

It's essentially a laptop that you can't take anywhere.

I'm surprised they are still even being sold. Any Intel mac is considered obsolete at this point especially considering the drastic efficiency and performance jump you get with the M chips.
So the top of Apple's Mac lineup, the Mac Pro, is obsolete according to you.

What exactly do you think "unified memory" is?
(Spoiler alert: it's shared memory using the same RAM chips that you can get on upgradable PC modules. Apple doesn't make RAM.)
Look, I like Apple too but you're definitely choosing the wrong points to argue.

And why are you so angry?

Excellent top tier computer system for anybody under any scenario other than portability.
Or needing to run more than 8GB worth of apps simultaneously or store more than 256GB (minus whatever the OS itself consumes) or needing dedicated video RAM or wanting to play games or...

With a $450 discount, it is very likely that new M2 models are going to be announced very soon. It's been common to see Apple products get uncommon discounts to clear inventory shortly before a new model is introduced.
It's common to see uncommon discounts?

This also comes with the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID, which is going for $140 on Amazon. That would be a must for me if I bought a Mac, but you'd have to buy it separately with the Mac Mini.

I'd jump on this if only the display had a display input. My desk fits only one monitor and I need an external monitor for work. Such an unfortunate omission.
Not sure if it would work, but it might support video out through USB C.

That's because they are non-Apple phones with a slug of an SOC (usually Android based), and require boat loads of RAM to stay even remotely competitive with Apple processor wise.

Top tier Apple iPhone = 6GB RAM - runs circles around anything else.

IPad Pro = 8GB RAM - dominates every tablet containing more RAM. Even the lower specked iPads with 3-6GB RAM simply throttle any non-Apple tablet.

Same for iMac = 8GB RAM - beats the daylights out of most systems. You're in the $2k range on anything else to top this $999 iMac, and even then the 3rd party monitor, sound system, and camera can't compete unless you jack up to $2,500.
You obviously don't understand what RAM does if you think that having a powerful CPU negates the need for RAM.

I have never owned a Mac so have minimal experience with MacOS but how is it possible that 8gb RAM is acceptable in this day and age? Does MacOS somehow use RAM differently? Can it play video games well? I'm just genuinely curious.
No. It does not use RAM differently in amy way which would compensate for having less capacity.

RAM is high-speed temporary storage and Apple uses the same RAM chips as anyone else. "Unified Memory" is just Apple marketing speak for shared memory that can be accessed quickly from different components. This quick access is helpful in some cases but cannot make 8GB of RAM hold more than 8GB.

Anyone who tells you differently is talking out of their ass from an Apple marketing slide.

Also, no, Macs are not good for gaming. The hardware might be otherwise capable but MacOS does not support the most common frameworks used by developers to create games. Most developers do not target Apple's proprietary "Metal" graphics framework.

Yes - it uses unified RAM or memory.

Very different approach. Equivalent to 16GB of DDR5 in a windows unit.
This is absolutely false.

SSD read/write speeds are slower on M1 Mac mini than on M1 iMac 8 core CPU / GPU.

Plus MacOS Ventura is blazingly faster than MacOS Monterey, so, it also depends on if the latest system software update is present. These iMacs ship with Monterey. One must upgrade to Ventura to see peak performance.

YouTube comments are unreliable unless they are providing independently sourced and verifiable comparative data.
lol

You calling YouTube comments unreliable after spewing nonsense about magical "Unified Memory" is hilarious hypocrisy.

As an IT professional, I can tell you these are outdated at this point. Highly recommend the new M2 Mac Minis for $600. Sometimes you can get them for $500. Pair with a 4K monitor and you're golden.
Also as an IT professional (non Mac user), I disagree. This is a perfect ALL IN ONE entry level system that will work great for 90% of users. It is less expensive than the 12" iPad Pro and you get so much more. Of course you can piece together a better system for less money. But then you have a desk full of boxes, cables and are much more prone to issues. This is a great deal and the majority of people, non-gamers, would be totally fine with this system. A single cord and everything works, can't beat that.
