Depends on your needs. For this price it'd be hard to put together a comparable setup to this including a quality monitor, decent keyboard, mouse/track pad, respectable webcam and mic and speakers. This has it all in a very attractive package. Very slick.
Most likely this price is because M2 iMacs are imminent.

Hilarious to read through all the naysayer comments on the 2021 iMac.

Please, if you will, humor us all and put together a package for $1,000 that meets or beats this unit's 8 core CPU / GPU Passmark scores, SSD read/write speeds, 4.5k 100% P3 color space monitor at 218 ppi and 500 nits, WiFi speed of 760 MBit/s, two (2) Thunderbolt 3's at 40Gbps, two (2) USB 3.1 Gen 2's at 10Gbps, a 1080P webcam and microphones of this quality, and a six (6) speaker sound system that is equally as superb.

Also, don't forget the cost of a keyboard with fingerprint login and a mouse capable of multi touch input.

We will all be waiting for the cost of the i7 system or better it will take to beat this iMac at $1,000. You can try, but if you can't put the system together right here right now, well, then you simply live in a world where measurable objective criteria are meaningless.

Waiting endlessly for a link to something even marginally better in all of these metrics at $1,000 or less.

Oh, and don't worry, there will be no requirement that it be less than 10lbs or 1/2 inch thick like the iMac.

Good luck!

I just feel like you're better off with a Mac mini M1 (or 2) and an external monitor (or 2).

I'm writing this from an iMac and can confirm a higher benchmarked rig can be built for less than $1000. Passmark lists multiple Intel i3 processors (currently $100-ish and even cheaper when bundled with a motherboard) that outperform the less-than-mediocre M1. If you need me to list out $850 worth of comparable quality parts and accessories for something that is actually scalable and not about to be obsolete anytime soon, I'm sure everyone else with access to the internet can do that for you.
Don't forget the monitor of equal quality, and the sound system, and etc., etc., etc…

You'll never get down to $999.

Not going to lie this is a great read for anyone wondering. I was thinking the same but given the monitor, Keyboard, mouse scenario absolutely. I do wish it had 16gb but other than that solid absolute solid machine.

My anecdotal experience with iMac is that I have owned one for 4 years that has now developed several red vertical lines running from the top to the bottom of the screen. The computer is out of warranty so unless I want to pay a Mac Tech to repair this, I am stuck with this problem. Caveat emptor.

Always a treat to see these Apple threads go off the rails. It's really simple… this is a deal thread, the merit of the machine is not the topic. Is it a good deal? Sure, especially considering how much this EXACT item costs elsewhere. Nice find OP
My iMac developed red vertical lines after 4 years of use. That IS relevant to the type of deal this is.

This is not your iMac by any means. Completely different unit, monitor, parts, manufacturing process, etc. Your critique is invalid.

Just setting up my new iMac that I ordered when I originally posted this deal.

It's a beautiful machine and the setup was painless and even fun.

cool!
$1000 was a great deal for this machine.

In Apple land this sort of discount is almost unheard of. I guess they were clearing out some stock of various colors that they still had in inventory.

Not that it really matters, but which color did you get?

Awesome deal. Not the newest processor but Apple M series are nice! Actually buying one to put in living room as decoration and occasional use. I already have 3 in the house, each of my 2 kids has one and I have one in my den

Orange. Not my favorite color in general, but it looks nice with rest of my stuff.

It is cool, all of the color matching accessories (mouse, keyboard, and cables. Silly but cool.

I've had my green one for about a year and I love it. Paired it with a Magic Trackpad and can't go back to a mouse ever again. I'd get another in a heartbeat if I ever needed to.

Personal claims are not proof.

What in the world is everyone storing locally that can't be in the Cloud and available instantly? Is it like a warm blankie that you just have to have with you and always close by Schroeder?

Don't get me wrong, I was right there with you, in 2003, and kept everything local. Two decades hence though, there simply is no need unless you deal with massive media files or use your PC for gaming.

If you live in a remote area, then the storage needs are justified.

The 256GB absolutely is a limiting factor, depending on your usecase.

I bought my Macbook entirely for software development, and even after removing all games and misc files I keep on my cloud, I'm still fighting for space. XCode seems to take up over 30GB by itself, and seems to demand 20+ more of free space to allow for any updates. That alone feels like half of the "usable" space on the laptop. I'm incapable of keeping all the programming languages I'd like to play with because 256GB isn't nearly enough, 512GB would've been perfect though.

It does. Intel's 13th gen processors are no joke, which isn't the biggest surprise since they're also 2 years newer than the M1! The M1 is also tuned for power efficiency, while AMD/Intel desktop CPU's are always tuned for power, so there's no way the M1 would keep up. The M1 is not some invincible chip - Apple's chips are mostly incredible for its power envelope, but if silence / power is not a concern then they're nothing special (besides being the only excellent ARM CPUs).

On topic: Okay deal, but if it must be a Mac, I'd still recommend a Macbook or Mac Mini instead. The iMac color scheme is questionable, and unless I'm reading this wrong it comes with a keyboard w/o touch ID, along with the magic mouse (which is terrible). Just buy the components separately, and even if it costs slightly more, you'll have a better setup in the end.
