Ventilation. Ideally an enclosure too, with safety glass for a window that's rated for the correct wavelength. If you get the long focus one it comes with the air tip and you can get a pump for around $40. Much cleaner, faster cuts and engraving.
And don't leave it unattended when in use, in case your material catches fire

I already own the 5.5W long focus model. Any benefit to getting the short focus unit? I've seen the YT review and didn't see a compelling reason, but wanted to ask you all.

Dont have a short focus Lazer but I know there better for engraving, they have better accuracy than long focus which is used for cutting because the place it gets lazered is wider

How long does it take to engrave a coffee mug? Is it a long learning curve?

You won't be engraving a coffee mug with this, at least not out of the box. You need a roller attachment that can spin the mug rather than moving the Y axis of the laser, since the curvature of the mug would otherwise wreak havoc with the focus. This [amazon.com] seems like a low cost option for tumblers, but for reasons that should be fairly obvious it's not going to work that great for a coffee mug. You'd need to find something with 2 separate rollers that go on each end of the mug, like this [walmart.com] or this [tomtop.com]. Note that I can't vouch for the efficacy of any of those, since I don't engrave mugs...I just know it won't work without an add-on.

Oh, but to answer the question you asked...it depends on the size of the design and the color/thickness of the target. A small design on thin black paint will go much faster than a large design on thicker, lighter colored paint. This design [youtube.com] is a fairly decent size on a pastel colored tumbler and it only takes about 7 minutes, not terrible.

I got the LF at the $120 price and have loved what I've been able to do with it so far. Light burn really makes it easy to use and about done with my trial so I'm gonna end up having to buy it. Never did try the free program. I've honestly thought of ordering this one just to have a back up for the gantry as replacement parts and switch out the lasers depending on engraving vs cutting since they are interchangeable. I do wish it was even the slightest bit bigger to fit two coasters at a time. Might not feel the urge to order an Xtool D1.

Thanks! I've been using LaserGRBL. Did okay on line art when vectorizing, but rastering and filling wasn't good. I should give Light Burn a try and see if it's better.
