Great competitive game! Great for the family from about 10 years old and up without too much of a learning curve. Very replayable with just the base game. If you really get into it there are several extension and expansion sets to either allow for more players (base game is for 3-4 players) or add new elements and dynamics to the game play. I've seen price drop into the low to mid $20s, but it's a solid buy at $29.97 if you get free shipping or pick-up.

This was the game that lead me down the expensive road of buying and trying new games. Before Catan it was monopoly, risk, and life... But this game opened me up to more complex board games and it is still one of my favorite board games years down the road. Worth the $30 if you have a couple friends that want to try a new game.

Before you return it... Is an hour long game incredibly long? If so, there are a lot of board games that you will miss out on. Once you learn the rules it can be a 30-45 minute game.

And second, the game is based on dice probabilities... So yes luck does play into the game a little bit, but I wouldn't say it's mostly luck based. You collect resources when your dice number is rolled... So yeah, it's possible to roll seven 2s in a row but that would be very uncommon.

I would check out the many free games on the phone and test it out a few times before you completely return it and never give it a try. Just my two cents.

Highly recommend space base or, to a lesser extent, Machi Koro over Catan. I'm grateful to Catan for brining many to this wonderful hobby, but there are now better similar alternatives.
