Any feedback on the keyboard? Would the function keys on the left make it awkward to get used to?
I programmed the functions keys to do the same things as the keys next to them incase I press the wrong key. Just a workaround. It does get awkward sometimes.

I bought this laptop around 1.5 months back so no luck on price protection. Here are my thoughts
1) Specs vs the Price is quite good. I was hoping to buy L5 Pro but I am happy with this laptop. I would certainly purchase the laptop again at this price if I could.
2) Can handle a large number of tasks without sweating.
3) Upgrade is easy. I bought the crucial 32gb for 81 dollars and P5 Plus for 55 dollars. The second NVME slot comes with a heatsink. I have seen transfer speeds of more than 1GBPS while moving files. I also ran benchmark --- though I do not remember the numbers.
4) Heavy but can charge via USBC if the load is less- need a USBC adaptor that outputs more than 100W though -- I use an insignia charger rated at 112 W. I believe the apple charger 140W should work. I tried searching for whether the USBC port is PD 3.1 that supports more than 100 W charging -- could not find any info. Also I do not know of a software that can tell me at what wattage is the laptop charging --- if anybody has suggestions, please let me know. This is basically to get rid of that brick charger which makes this laptop unportable. If there is a 240W USBC charger (although i am not aware of one), it will be perfect. However, with the 100W charger, you can do simple office work and the laptop will still charge. So 100W charger does make it portable -- at least in my opinion.
5) Thermal performance is quite good. Never exceeds 70-75 for both CPU and GPU while gaming. Occasionally, the laptop does become hot with minimal load if the laptop has not been switched off for quite some time. However, a restart fixes this. Also, I put the fan on max sometimes (the sound of the fans at max does not bother me much -- YMMV). I have been monitoring the temperature for 1.5 months. The temperature with usual workload (without GPU) stays around 30-35 degrees for CPU which is quite good --- I usually put the fan on max for about 10 minutes when I start using the laptop --- then the temperature stays at 30-35 degrees for CPU for continously 8-9 hours of work with multiple chrome tabs running pdfs and streaming and vscode.
6) What I don't like about the laptop are the sharp edges -- can be easily fixed by using cooling pad --- I have not used one.
7) The screen is a little bit dim but at 90% brightness, it is sufficient inside the room. I have not used it outside. I love the screen space for coding and working on documents.
8) The speakers suck -- however, you can download fxstudio app and play around with it --- this makes the speakers sound really good.
9) HP offers a no risk 3 year accidental warranty for around 3 years. If you don't use the warrant for 3 years then they refund you the money. This was one of the reasons I bought this laptop.
10) I did a fresh install and manage all drivers through intel app and MS update.

11) Ohhh... one more thing, I really like the keyboard. It is mechanical and has that beautiful clicking sound (not too loud and not too soft). Also per RGB key lighting is awesome. I have some keys that I have lighted that I use multiple times and the per RGB key lightning makes them stand out. I don't use a numpad and hence do not regret having one. I got used to the layout quickly and do not have any mistypes anymore.

12) SDcard reader is quite good.

Any other questions are welcome.

Not really. I hardly even notice them while gaming or working.

Last year I got the previous model with 11th gen CPU and 3060 GPU. Great machine. It did have issues when I upgraded to 64GB of RAM, but they replaced the motherboard under warranty and it's been rock solid ever since.
How in the world do you upgrade RAM and have the motherboard fail?

In all my years of 'fixing' laptops, I have never caught a motherboard failure.

I don't know, it was weird. The motherboard didn't fail, it was rock solid with the the 16GB RAM it came with. It started getting unstable and randomly crashing when I upgraded to 64GB. Ran memtest86 and the onboard BIOS diagnostics and it showed bad RAM. So I exchanged the RAM. Same thing happened. Exchanged again. Same problem. Both times it was stable when I put the original RAM back in while waiting for exchange.

Finally I did the tests yet again with the 64GB RAM, and one socket showed bad. I swapped the chips, re-ran the tests, same socket showed bad. Three sets of bad RAM seemed very unlikely so I finally opened a support case with HP and sent it to them. They determined one of the RAM sockets was bad and replaced the motherboard. It's been great ever since. No symptoms or errors with 16GB RAM, it always tested clean. The problem only showed up with upgraded RAM. Strangest hardware problem I ever had, but it's still all good now, months later. Dontknow

.
1. Can you confirm if the USB-C port can be used for charging? I have the same laptop but when I looked up online, the information I found suggested that this laptop does not support USB-C Laptop charging.
2. Were you able to fit the NVME SSD with the heat sink or did you have to remove the heatsink?
3. Did you notice any difference (big difference) after upgrading from 16GB to 32GB ram?
4. Did you buy the HP 3 years accidental warranty through the HP support app?

Thanks in advance for answering all the questions. Smilie

They must have gone downhill, as the only bad component on my 5-year old Omen X 17 is the mechanical keyboard. About the most solid laptop I've owned, second only to an older Asus tank of a laptop.

Sorry for dumb question. Why is the processor listed at 1.7GHz? Isn't that the base of efficient core, while performance core has 2.3GHz base?

Has anyone had this for about a year?

HP has been known to purposefully make busted laptops and hired the VooDoo Omen guy so they could keep build quality wretched and drive that company into the ground. They fired him when he suggested fewer, higher quality models.

They also showed signs of hating users and hating cooling and hating hard drive longevity and drove Palm into the ground too.

Put broken capacitors they specifically selected because they were busted in desktops.

Need some proof that they have changed over the years and aren't still the least reliable laptop brand on purpose.
