Once you activate, can you see if it is possible to change the plan to an 5GB annual one? I'm thinking of getting this for my son and that is the plan I'd like to continue on after the first month, and hopefully not have to cancel the plan first.
What I think I want to try is use just the one 5GB $15 month that I already paid for, and disable autopay and just not pay so it lapses, then shorty thereafter, buy a $100 12 month 1gb/month plan link [boostmobile.com] (new account/email/payment method of course), put that sim in and hope it unlocks 11 or 12 months later.
Anybody know if it will work? Are Boost unlocks on iPhone done by their system automatically or do they require a request and dealing with customer service?

As for changing plans, most are locked to the $40 plan. I'm in the process of porting out somewhere, and then porting back to boost using a different email/new account to get out from underneath it.
Despite there being no wording at the time of purchase, and it explicitly stating I could downgrade at any time, the "SYSTEM" won't allow it on my account. They're forcing the $40 plan to recoup the entire discount over 12 months while holding the phone hostage. It's BS.

Or you have to be with Boost for 12 continuous months?

No
They are very strict with their policy. It must be 12 month continuous service. You will get stuck with locked phones. I got stuck with 3 locked iPhones from Boost. Unlocked service from eBay is very expensive.
Port out requires that one provides the new carrier with the number (obviously), Boost account number (listed on "My Boost" site), and a number transfer PIN.
There's reddit posts claiming that 123456 will work for number transfer PIN. There's posts claiming it won't and you need to request it. There's posts claiming that successfully requesting one from Boost is super easy. There's posts claiming that successfully requesting one from Boost is a giant pain.
Anybody got any advice?

probably they have admin right to change phone lock condition?

The phone is carrier locked to Boost Mobile. It won't work on other carriers, except maybe on other MVNOs also owned (like Boost) by Dish Wireless. These are Ting Mobile, Republic Wireless, and Gen Mobile.
The "plan" seems to be tied to the customer in Boost's system, which is why one generally can't "downgrade" to a cheaper plan. But if you don't care about keeping the number, one can just let the initial plan lapse and sign back up as a new customer, which seems to only require a different email address and payment method, and get a new SIM and phone number and cheaper plan.
Boost will unlock the phone automatically after 12 months of continuous service. I believe it doesn't matter if it's 12 months of a cheap plan after 1 month of the included plan (by creating a new customer account). There are reports that it may unlock even sooner than that if you are lucky, and some reports that it will unlock after 12 months of service even if not one continuous plan. But that may be hit-or-miss.
There used to be a "white" unlocking chip that would magically unlock the phone, but Apple has updated things so they no longer work.
Then there are things like the "RSIM." I'd them them SIM card "wrappers." They fold "around" another provider's SIM card and go in the phone, and trick the phone into working by making the SIM appear to be from the original provider. I have no idea if they work, some of them seem to very clearly say that Boost doesn't work with theirs. They are marketed as "unlock cards" but they don't unlock the phone, it would be more accurate to call them "bypass cards" or something. I saw a claim that they cause increased battery drain. Some eBay listings show tens of thousands have sold, so I assume they work for many cases.
Then there are unlock "services" that, for a fee, will use various methods to permanently unlock a phone. Some phones may be unlockable with some sort of "hacking," but I get the impression their primary methods are social engineering and bribery. I.E. they can trick a carrier into unlocking a phone with knowledge of their processes and/or a good enough story, or they have someone "on the inside" of the various carriers who are happy to use their access to unlock a phone and share in the fee. I get the impression their M.O. is to advertise a price of $20-$30, and after they get paid and get the phone's info, respond to the customer that their phone requires more effort for an unlock and will be another $70. So the end cost seems to be around $100. It seems they generally will refund the intial payment if a customer declines the upcharge (fearing a chargeback I guess.)
Again, this is not coming from a position of experience, just somebody who reads the deal threads and some Reddit threads. Please correct me if you know otherwise. Hope this helps somebody.
