I have the 790, no real complaints just some nit picky things.

The wifi and App have been difficult to use regularly but I think that is because it wants 2.5ghz wifi which I do not use because I have an eero.

2.4ghz or 5ghz? 2.5ghz is not wifi

Eero automatically connects to 2.4 ghz when that's the only supported frequency

I'm actually looking to replace my broken 8(?] Year old Masterbilt electric vertical smoker. I was really considering a pitboss as my cousin got his March '19 and has enjoyed it since. Then I saw the 790 on display at BJ's last weekend and was impressed with the build quality of the thing. It was SOLID. I started researching it and came across the same as you, however most of those reviews did say something negative, mostly about emptying the pellets so I figured maybe they are real.

Additionally, I searched oakford on Instagram, YouTube, tiktok and found a few videos of users with them and it seems to give good results (one guy seared his chuck steak to hell though).one thing I wasn't sure about was the apparent lack of water tray. Upon research it seems as if you might not need one with pellet smokers?

I decided to pull the trigger and ordered earlier this week and it was delivered damaged. Externally box looked OK, but when I started unpacking the hopper end was smashed in and pushed towards the grill so you couldn't open the hopper lid past 75%. Also the heavy insulated part inside the lid was damaged .
However, opening and closing the grill lid was impressive, that thing THUDS closed... seriously heavy. So although I was clearly disappointed, I was still very eager to hopefully get an unmolested replacement.

I've heard negative things about nexgrill, but only about their cheapest of cheap grills. This grill seems significantly robust, so I'm hoping the materials they used including paint etc. Will make this thing stand out. For this price you cannot beat it with the features it has.

I do wish they offered a direct flame searing zone thogh.

I'm intrigued, I've had a Traeger Lil Tex Elite for 5 years now and love it but would love a bigger smoker. Bad reviews seem to be mostly about the app and wi-fi connectivity. I'm tempted to bite the bullet, waiting to see if anyone else chimes in on their own personal experience with these smokers

If you're weighing the sear vs WiFi, look at the Pit Boss Savannah (Walmart). I got one a few weeks back because I love the massive cooking area and it has the searing area over the burn pot. Just lacks WiFi, but I use a Meater and an old phone to monitor my temps anywhere. I figure any time you need to change temps, you need to do something with the food anyways, spray, wrap, etc...

I've had a Nexgrill. One of the cheaper ones to get me by for 2 years or so. It was absolutely abysmal. Tried 2 regulators but it would never let me cook with lower temps. Moved to pellets a few years back and just did the upgrade from a 450 Sq-In unit for the sheer size of the Savannah.

Either way, I hope this one works out great. More competition is how we get better prices and new features. These are competitive with the WiFi option included across the board. And, the more people that get into grilling and smoking, the better.

These (at least the 1000) have been periodically cheaper the last few weeks. Mine is sitting for pickup at the local home depot, paid $499 about a week ago.

"These grills are rated 4.5 out of 5 stars from 80+ reviews."

Home Depot has a history of hiding negative reviews. The Tool Bear has called Home Depot out for this practice. I left a very detailed negative review for a Westinghouse inverter generator I bought from Home Depot. My review disappeared within 6 months.

As someone who smokes pork butts, reverse sears ribeyes, brisket, and an occasional full rack, the small grill is enticing. I get tired of the pellet burn and wasted space.

Adding the little guy.

Any issues with the hopper getting clogged on these? Can you an accesory or anything for cold smoking cheese?

I bought the 790 a month ago. The connectivity is complete garbage, the app crashes every time you use it. The temperature reported is also 20 degrees higher than reality. I still need to use my thermapen for this issue alone. Also came with a part missing. They replaced it for free but it took at least a week to arrive.

Overall I'd say it just falls into the "just OK" budget category.
