The Char Griller I have is the DUO charcoal/gas combo. I've had it two years (with a cover) and its starting to develop moderate to severe rust and pitting. Just wanted to throw that out there to ya.

I have had one of these for 8ish years. I haven't touched it for the past 4 years and just checked and it's rusted beyond repair.

always covered and under a patio. It was great when I used it, don't expect it to last more than 5 years

I'm here from an alert I had set to buy a friend this grill if it ever went on sale.

I've had this grill since 2014 and have zero issues. I have done everything from an overnight brisket to chicken legs even baking a cake. This grill holds temperature extremely well and for this price it is more than worth it. My top vent was gunked up so I took it off and cleaned it three times maybe, the wooden handle started cracking but I just wrapped baseball bat rubber around it and it's good as new. All I have done as far as repairs is replace the grate once because I broke a corner piece off. I leave it on my patio uncovered. Minor rust issues a few years ago but I cleaned it up in under an hour. I keep telling myself I'm going to replace the gasket seal but I haven't and it works perfectly fine despite a tiny leak. There are also various mods and maintenance tips than can be found online.

I bought mine on clearance at lowes for like $150 nine years ago and I've had it longer than my oldest son and haven't really taken care of it as I should. Anybody that says this isn't a solid deal for this grill is talking out of their ass. People have paid $200+ for grills that rust through and don't seal in the heat even a quarter as well as this.

New into grills. Is this a good deal for the price and specs? Tyvm
All ceramic grills are pretty much the same, it's the surrounding hardware you have to worry about. If the frame rusts away, what do you do? The grill itself will outlive you if you don't drop it Smilie

This is a pretty decent deal for a 20" ceramic. It will fit 2 pork shoulders or a full size brisket no problem. I like the fact that a load of charcoal will last nearly an entire day in these things.

Yes. I bought one last year at Lowes for $339 and thought that was a decent deal. Not a ceramic, but performs very similar. I would get this.

I also have had one for 8 years always covered - Wisconsin. I use it all year long, Holding up great. If you dont season the grill it will rust since all the oil has been removed.

it does run hot - its hard to keep at 225 it likes to run 260-275.
great for Poultry.
Is that the built in thermometer or a digital one? The built in one is seldom accurate.

The Char-Griller Akorn Auto Kamado is also $100 off at Home Depot. It's about $130 more and has free direct delivery. It was cheaper in December, but it's still a great price

It has a digital thermostat to control the temperature. It won't light it, but it should maintain it. It does require power (but there are mods to use a battery if you're so inclined). It comes with an indirect heating "stone", but it's made of stainless steel.

If for some reason the electronics die, I believe you can replace the bottom ashtray with the one from the standard model and that should let you continue using it.

Oh. The top vents out to the side instead of upwards. This prevents water from getting in.

You can also put a 17 inch grill rack from a Weber grill into this thing. This allows for better two zone cooking.

You can buy the replacement high-temp gasket that is used for big green eggs and apply it on this grill. It will perform a lot better since you will remove air leaks. It's about 20 or 25 bucks for a roll. Adding this hack can get your Char-griller Akorn to run more similarly to some of the pricier options like the big Green egg in terms of holding specific lower temps... without the fragile ceramic nature of the higher end kamados and while costing a fraction of the price. Also, purchasing the ceramic plate accessory for this grill will help with low-temp, slow cooks since it will help distribute heat and will also provide a surface to place a drip tray onto.

Weird. I did a prime rib over Easter and it kept right around 225 give or take a degree or two for 5 hours.
I am using Lump Charcoal if that matters.
it is very effecient for burning, way better then my masterbuilt 560

I do have the ceramic plate accessory and the heat is pretty even.

Speaking of turkeys, does Dr. Oz serving in the Turkish military make him a military turkey?

FYI, this grill isn't ceramic, which is part of the reason it's quite a bit less heavy than something like the Green Egg
