I've got a drawer of USB-C cables that I have no idea if they are USB 2 or 3, charging only and how many watts, PD or not, Thunderbolt or not, etc. A couple have "100W" on the label -- kudos to them.
Seems like a basic requirement the rookie USB standards board completely overlooked.
I can sneeze and Alexa will try to upsell that to me

I agree, Type-C cables should have been required to meet USB 3 data speeds at a minimum.
But the USB IF acceded to the concerns of those who wanted lower cost options, so USB 2 is the base data spec. For most users, for whom cables are just for charging, they'll never notice.
The connector is a big improvement, but the execution of the vision for Type-C has been uneven, if not bad in some respects, and not made any better when the USB IF concocted their harebrained naming scheme, and changed it again, while mostly everyone has ignored the physical marking requirements.
Now, the question has gone from "do I have the right cable that has that type of plug" to "do I have the right cable, since they all look the same, and have no markings to tell them apart."
Then there are the half-baked Type-C charging ports that won't work with Type-C sources, only Type-A, because the manufacturers were too cheap to spend a few cents on the pulldown resistors to properly make their devices indicate that they are passive sinks.

Contrast this to RMA on memory or drive replacement. Long form to fill out to see if you will get a RMA, then you have to ship the defective device via a signature required carrier at your cost, and then in a few weeks if you are lucky you get a replacement. Oh, and if you buy memory from some of the lower cost companies based in Taiwan you have to ship it there, and now you might be able just to buy a new one for that cost.
I realize lifetime warranties are expensive to the manufacturer, but most people don't use it even when the device fails. Anker is my go-to for cables, and have many more that have been working for years than I have returned which makes me say they make a much better product than the Amazon branded crap, and don't get me started about their customer service department which is also crap and requires an annual fee to be duped into buying into being a member with them.

Worth a shot if you need a long cable, and willing to take a chance on an off-brand cable. A lot of these Chinese companies will replace duds with no questions asked.
BTW, this purple one on Monoprice is showing 7.79 with free shipping at the moment.
