I've heard that frost free is not a good choice for an upright freezer because it has to sometimes raise the temperature a little as a part of the defrosting process, whereas a regular upright will stay at super cold temps all the time. Stuff stays frozen of course, but for longer term storage (which is usually what people want in a dedicated freezer) a manual defrost should keep your meat and whatever good for a longer period of time.

Depending on your definition of "longer term" a frostful freezer can be an impediment, because about once a year you need to eat (or otherwise get rid of) enough of the stuff in there and your other freezer(s) that you can fit everything left in your other freezer(s) for 24 hours to let the frostful freezer defrost. That said, most things aren't going to retain quality for longer than a year. Also (for me personally anyways) this ends of being kind of like moving - it forces you to go through everything, you find things you forgot and maybe don't need any more, etc.

Not completely correct. A frost free slightly heats the freezer walls to keep frost from forming. I have a freezer monitor on my ge and the temp never varies inside by more than 5 degrees. Get a frost free and don't worry.

Right, I usually wait to do a manual defrost until the weather outside is cold and I can keep everything frozen solid on the porch in a cooler for a bit.

Do you think I can place the upright freezer in the kitchen or laundry room (I don't have a garage and in a condo)? I did see a Hamilton upright freezer on sale at my local Costco, which would be perfect, but not sure how I could ship it in my Honda CRV. Thanks for any input.
