i have this exact unit for several years.. almost tempted to pick up a spare.. I could not be happier .. One of the best investments ive made.. Hooked it up myself was very simple..
I live in florida and put it in a add on room 20 by 15 that would never get cold.. Not only does it now get ice cold immediately, it actually chills the whole front of the house as well.. sometimes i dont even need to run the central system.. I realize air "conditioners" do just that .. they "condition" the air by removing the heat... this 24k unit .. feels like an actual air "chiller" It blows ice cold as if you are standing in front of the freezer with the door open.
And for all the Hvac gurus that like to monday night quarterback, I realize this is overkill for a 20 x 15 room.. I already had a 240 volt source available so i figured why not go bigger... and I certainly glad i did.. I love love love it !

People found my comment in the Pioneer thread really helpful, so sharing here too if it helps anyone!
  • There is great discussion about heat pumps and DIY installation in the FAQ of the r/heatpumps community on reddit [reddit.com].
  • In most states, you do not need to be a licensed HVAC contractor to install one of these systems and can still do it "on the books" by pulling an Owner-Builder permit. For example in California: https://www.cslb.ca.gov/consumers...rview.aspx
  • All heat pump systems have a factory charge that corresponds to a certain line length. You only need to add more refrigerant if you have longer lines than what the factory charge is good for. MRCOOL's differentiator is their pre-charged and vacuumed lines. The biggest difference this has from a practical standpoint is that you won't have to buy a vacuum pump and vacuum lines, and the connections are a bit more foolproof than a flare fitting which can have some quality variation.
  • This system is listed on NEEP Air Source Heat Pump [neep.org] and AHRI Certification [ahridirectory.org] directory. There is good additional documentation on those portals about the "actual" performance of these units at different temperatures.
  • A 24,000 BTU single zone system is rather large, and for most applications you likely don't need a system this big. For a point of reference, the entire heating/cooling load for a ~1500 sqft house in California would be easily covered by this system. In most cases, when you are installing a mini split you are trying to get targeted heating/cooling of a specific region of your home. One way to figure out how big of a system you need is to use a tool like CoolCalc [coolcalc.com] (I am happy to help with this if you need a second set of eyes)

Feel free to DM me if you have any heat pump questions, happy to help out!

Wow, this unit (maybe it was a gen 3) but definitely the 24K btu system was only $1499.

You are going to pay more for a Mr Cool DIY unit because it negates the the need to pull a vacuum and Mr Cool makes a great unti but $2000 doesn't seem very slick and as noted previously single output 24k unit puts a lot of heat or cool in one vent. You would be better off with multipe smaller units or a unit with multipe air handlers. My old heat pump is a 4-ton unit (48k btu) but the air handler pumps through my ducts to every room in the house except the garage. When it goes out I plan to install 4x 12k units throughout the house of install a multi-head unit but those don't really seem to save you any money and I'd rather have the redundancy of multiple compressors. Buy yourself some 3/8" crows feet from harbor freight for $13, r410a or r354b adapters for $10 on Amazon, a torque wrench, then rent for free a vacuum pump and manifold set from autozone or oreillys and then you can install a cheaper semi-diy unit and you can get a decent flare tool for $35 on Amazon if you want to cut your lines down to a custom length. Now you have the tools to install as many as you want. If you want to go one step further get yourself a micron gauge and a nitrogen tank but that is excessive in my opion for the diy'er. These mini-splits usually come precharged with freon or atleast I've never run into one that wasn't.

Mr cool is scamming on mini splits.
Same unit, but cheaper like everything on this site instead.

Or slightly more money than Costco with superior heating and efficiency. https://www.alpinehomeair.com/pro...hh22-kit15

The 18k is really good value.

I bought this on March 28th! Hopefully I can call and get a price match tomorrow.

UPDATE: They gave me the $300 credit!

Overall I'm happy with my purchase. Based on my experience, if you're going to install this in the typical way of installing on an outside wall and placing the condensing unit near the wall unit, it should be a pretty easy DIY job. If you're like me and want it on an interior wall that is a long way from the condensing unit, it's a pretty involved job.

I ended up buying a 50ft extension line set and found you also have to buy couplers separately from the line set. Since I ran it up thru the attic, I also had to install a condensation pump. It definitely was a multi-day job in my scenario.

Everything is super quiet and works great. The wall unit, the condensing unit, and the pump are all surprisingly quiet. I'm very happy with my purchase.

I self installed the 18K version of this unit in my garage. The install wasn't easy but I needed no help including no AC person to charge it. The self-charging system they use worked perfectly. It's been happily running for six months with no problems. Very good product. The most difficult part was the hole in the exterior wall since I have a brick exterior on my garage, but was even able to do that with the right tools. So far it exceeds expectations.

You seem very knowledgable. I am comparing the costco one (and the ones you listed) to https://www.lowes.com/pd/MRCOOL/5013738101 . Other than seer rating, is there any reason I would not pick the lowes one? My use case needs to prioritize the overall upfront cost over the ongoing energy cost.

Only looking at it quickly, they seem so.
Basically the condenser has the refrigerant in it and the lines come pre vacuumed. MrCool the lines come with the refrigerant in them.

Seems like just a different way to skin the cat.

I appreciate the links and alternate options available.

Though to be fair, even though the prices are consistently less, the variance isn't so much that I'd describe MrCool as "scamming".

It's scamming when "Mr cool" and distributor are the same company and a lot more expensive than this other relabeler and even a sale price at Costco is higher.
scratch and dent have redeemable prices for certain products.

It's not like Mr cool has superior support 😂
The distributor, Ingram's, doesn't return calls, period, if you have an issue.

Yes. The ones with the higher SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2 rating get 20% tax deduction up to $600….

I didn't check the 2023 ratings on the one you posted. Costco one also now offers lifetime warranty on compressor.
