Completely different styles of guitar. The Gretsch is a guitar built to look and sound like the old blues guitars from the 40's/50's. The Ibanez is a guitar made to feel/play like an electric. I have 16 guitars, most of which are much more expensive than the Jim Dandy, yet I still reach for the Jim Dandy more than any of my guitars. It's just so easy/convenient to pick up and play due to it's size/comfort, and its sound really is endearing (as boxy as the sound is). That's how it was meant to sound. It may not be for everyone, but everyone I've known that's owned one has said it's the one guitar they'll never get rid of. Those that sold theirs ended up getting another because they missed it. That said, they often come with high action, since a lot of people buy them for slide guitar. I play side on it sometimes, but I prefer lower action, but a couple turns off the truss rod fixed that. The frets often need to be polished/played-in on guitars in this price-range, but that's to be expected. The string spacing wasn't a problem for me, and I have large hands (XXL gloves), but YMMV obviously.

Sold the Martin GS mini, still have the Jim Dandy, but actually I wouldn't compare a parlor guitar to a traditional guitar body generally saying. I have also the Alvarez mini jumbo and this is a fantastic sounding small travel guitar. I got also the Guild mini jumbo but still prefer the Alvarez!

The Alvarez also includes a nice study gig bag:

I agree that for a parlor and blues tones it's fine. But soooo many people recommend this as a beginner guitar. That's why I bought it. It's NOT that. For what it is, I'm sure it's great...if you play that way. I don't so it wasn't for me. On the bright side guitar center gave me 90% what I paid for it after having it a year
Planning to get this for my 10year old , but not sure how long she will have the interest on guitar ,,, does guitar center buy used guitars?

I bought an Alvarez from Photo Savings (merchant in the link) via Amazon a couple months ago and all was good. Brand new and setup perfectly out of the box. Just needed to be tuned. Photo Savings is an authorized Alvarez dealer as well, so you get a full warranty.

That's a great deal on the LJ2.

Bought it last year at around $109 and wouldn't buy it again. It's okay at best, sounds and plays about like a $100 guitar. No way it's worth the "regular price" of $189...

I watched reviews on YouTube and lots of people like the guitar
More than a few compare it to a bigger ukulele - which it can sound like
Israel Kamakawiwo'ole could do a nice "Over the Rainbow" on this

I was tempted to buy this but a reviewer who liked it said the strings are narrow and harder to play. A poster above said the same thing so I'm going to stay away since I have 10 thumbs

6.20 into review

Martin GM Mini? There's a Taylor GS Mini. Did you really owned it? Or just made that up? I think anybody who's bought a Taylor would know not to call it a Martin.

For first-time buyers, I would not recommend this guitar; it probably isn't the guitar you expect.

Had it. Hated it. Strings are close together. Sound is pitiful. If u can play a parlor guitar for what it's supposed to do then great. But just to practice you can do better. Traded for an Ibanez tcy10 and it's 10x better
Respectfully disagree, it sounds great and is perfect to sit around practicing.

I have a GS mini but need a second couch guitar. Do you recommend anything under $200 that compares in playability? Tone is not as important to me.

I have a small handful of mini guitars (Martin lmxe, Taylor gs mini, ENYA go, etc) and one thing I noticed for me was that my tendency was to play to aggressive which is what you shouldn't do for a better tone sure it's louder but the tone is better played softer…… albeit quieter but with better tone…. I haven't played the Jim dandy so this may or may not apply but certainly worth trying.

They do buy used guitars. I'd like to see what folks with more knowledge of their practices says about this, but from what I've read, for common, low-end guitars they might offer half of market value, while for expensive, highly desirable guitars they can sell quickly, they might pay as much as 80% of market value. I assume there's a value below which they might not consider it worth their time and display space, and this could be in that territory.

I'll add that an electric or classical guitar is likely a better beginner guitar because they are much easier on the fingers.

I have 8 of these guitars. I have the complete Americana series:

Pics - https://i0.wp.com/www.ifitshipits...=700&ssl=1

Info - https://www.ifitshipitshere.com/w...americana/

and then I have one in each of the different colors available although I think I'm still missing one or two.

The main thing you need to remember when you buy a guitar like this is you're going to need a setup. Straight out-of-the-box the action is high you might have a little fret buzz and for the price you're paying that's perfectly acceptable. I love playing dirty delta Blues and 50s rock and roll classics on these guitars. They are insanely fun and sound wonderful for what they are and are all around an excellent value.

I have Martins, gibsons, vintage takamines, fenders, taylors you name it. Probably 20 ish guitars total. When I get a few friends over, we all pick up one of these little gretches and have some damn fun jam sessions. If you don't like this guitar. it's because you don't like what it was made to play or you don't have it set up properly. For the record I have large hands and wear an ex large glove and I find the playability just fine.

I'm so sorry Bro! If you check my reply post, you will see that I copied just the model name the poster was using without thinking. Sorry! The Martin is actually the LX1 and yes, I've owned it and sold it … but I still have my Martin D-42, my Gibson SJ200, Gibson1960's J45 Red Spruce Japan Custom Shop Special, Gibson L-OO Original … and a couple of others. I'm really sorry for that mistake!

Got mine today. For ~$115 it's a great deal for a guitar to keep on the couch or learn with. New strings, 1/4 turn of the nut, and 2mm sanded off the bridge and it plays like a $500 guitar (still sounds small and a little bit like a toy).
