Are they both 17s? That tends to make a difference.
Yes the one from another SD a while back was a 17" but with a 3070ti and folks there said it had throttling due to overheating. Not sure if this is the same or an improved design, or if maybe those folks were overblowing the issue. Was hoping someone would have first hand knowledge.
There is an MSI Vector GP66/76 with the 3080ti at Costco right now, not sure if that one is considered better or not compared to this Omen. It is about the same price.

Thanks for filling me in. I'm not sure whether there is a notable difference in cooling ability, but now I'm kind of curious. It's certainly not unheard of for different models to have cooling systems tuned by engineers for the heat they have to disperse, but these days, I'd say that if the chassis is the same, most likely so is the cooling (which, from the sound of it, is likely a bad sign).
I've only bought one official out-of-the-box gaming machine is it's an MSI GF65 Thin 9SE, and while it gets pretty warm, especially around the top of the keyboard, it's stable and runs well (I did some power curve/undervolting/overclockingish stuff that seemed to be enough for it not to throttle and to perform well in 1080p).
I think that most gaming laptops get complaints for having heat issues, because that's basically the name of the game. pack as much (heat-dispersing) power as you can in a small space. Some still do a much better job than others, but every manufacturer has better or worse lines and models. I would definitely check this machine (and these reports) out if I were ready to replace my MSI, but I'm not there yet. Might do a desktop instead.
Feels overpriced...
300 nits.
The Lenovo that was on sale for $1500 with newer specs and RTX 4070 and i7-13700, with a 500 nits QHD screen 240hz.
The VRAM benefits might matter to some gamers with the 3080 Ti.
