Well I didn't understand the hack so looks like I now bought the deal as advertised… which still isn't terrible.

The hack is to just return the item you don't want to get money back .As long as the cart has a separate price charged for both items. It is a typical thing when it is a buy a tool ,pick a free tool at HD.
Either walk over to Returns , or don't pick the unwanted item up and after 7 days they put it back and refund you ,or sometimes ship one item and cancel and pick the other up at store.
Many ways to go about it
