There is faith in the US government?

Jk, not trying to start a war.
Banks, and the sawbucks yer investing in, are pretty good examples of this. Not much happens without it. So yeah, funny

Another option is a 12 month CD with Clearpath credit union at 6%. You can become a member of the credit union by donating $5.

Wouldn't the debt ceiling be an issue as June 1st is right around the corner?
You can be rest assured that congress isn't going to blow up their entire wealth portfolios over some squabbling about spending.

Best resource on how to buy t-bills?
I'm looking for this too. I'm not sure if it's even possible to buy them in my ETrade account but when I looked I couldn't find them.

I invest in crypto. 😊

Again, I did not mean to start any problems; just saw an opportunity to make a joke. I hope you're okay and I didn't offend you.

The draw for CDs at the moment is that it DOES lock up your money, and more importantly the rate, for x months. With the feds hinting at not increasing the rates in the near term we may be at peak interest rates. So people who have the extra cash want to lock in the rate while it still high.

That being said it doesn't seem like the rates will drop by much in 1 month.

And fwiw T bills aren't insured, but CDs are.

Lol, if the US Gov't defaults on paying back its T Bills, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have enough money to ensure payment for the CDs/FDIC either.

After putting the max 250k in citizens (FDIC insured limit), can put another 250k here for decent yields for money that is just sitting around in your savings account. 👍🏼

Check your favorite brokerage site to see a list of CDs they offer. You can also filter by length and whether they are callable, etc.

Last I checked Fidelity is offering some 6, 9, 12, month non-callable CDs @ 5.15% right now. Thinking about throwing a good chunk of change at 3-4 laddered CDs at this rate. What does everyone think, are we at/near the peak? Was the most recent Fed hike already baked in?
Thanks, especially for the "non-callable" information. At least 2 people have asked whether the NASA CD is non-callable, and there is no answer. Does anyone know?

The US government will not default. We have had 106 years of budgets and 96 times we have had these so called debt ceiling "crises". In the end, they make all the cuts they need to, put in the pork they need to, and raise the ceiling. It is all political posturing - from both sides.
Tell me you've never seen Idiocracy without telling me you've never seen Idiocracy... (i.e. this particular debt ceiling crisis is on an accelerated timeline due to decreased tax receipts and exacerbated by a Freedom Caucus who can't do math).

Just curious why just Verizon if the stocks?
There are many which will give you same or better returns or even some ETFs like JEPI .
Just an example. Could be any stock above 5%. Its easy to sell if you have a brokerage acct and is pretty stable. Not sure if there are fees (or Tax treatments) with ETF's that need to be considered.

If you have an account with NASA FCU, this is a great deal. However, if you need to open an account and transfer cash in and then transfer cash out - well maybe there are better alternatives.

1. Zero Coupon (3 mo) T-bills are yielding 5.2% (Cusip: 912796XY0). You can ladder these and get up to the 9 mos if you want. The extra 0.3% at NASA (assume $10k deposit) is worth $22.

2. Munis - I am seeing Munis (around 9 mos expiration) yielding 4% - these are tax exempt, so 4% / (1-your tax rate) to get after tax yield. These 4% therefore are close to 6%, but there is some risk in munis.

3. Is it worth it - so for each 0.5% increase in yield on a CD (assume you deposit $10k), you get an extra $37. If your bank has a 5% CD and you go through the hassle (I am assuming it is a hassle) to open a new account to get the 5.5%, is the extra $37 worth it to you. That is the real qs.

Just my $0.02. Peace
Where do you see Munis at 4pct? The FCU comparison with treasuries does not take into account that treasuries are not subject to state and local tax. Therefore in some cases treasuries with same tax comparison with FCU yield more than 6pct.

It hardly seems worth going for a CD when one can open a Wealthfront account or similar high yield account and get around 5%. Besides the tiny increase in %, is there much benefit here?

I have to say I really appreciate that NFCU runs their online banking on old Apollo computer systems. I tried to upload documentation and gave up. Instead moved my cash into TBills ftw.
