If you have an account with NASA FCU, this is a great deal. However, if you need to open an account and transfer cash in and then transfer cash out - well maybe there are better alternatives.

1. Zero Coupon (3 mo) T-bills are yielding 5.2% (Cusip: 912796XY0). You can ladder these and get up to the 9 mos if you want. The extra 0.3% at NASA (assume $10k deposit) is worth $22.

2. Munis - I am seeing Munis (around 9 mos expiration) yielding 4% - these are tax exempt, so 4% / (1-your tax rate) to get after tax yield. These 4% therefore are close to 6%, but there is some risk in munis.

3. Is it worth it - so for each 0.5% increase in yield on a CD (assume you deposit $10k), you get an extra $37. If your bank has a 5% CD and you go through the hassle (I am assuming it is a hassle) to open a new account to get the 5.5%, is the extra $37 worth it to you. That is the real qs.

Just my $0.02. Peace

Credit Unions are insured by NCUA [wikipedia.org], the credit union version of the FDIC. And NASA FCU is NCUA insured: https://www.nasafcu.com/about-us

Yeah, it's very confusing. I funded the basic savings account with $5 from my credit card. And then after the account set up I then was able to set up an ACH transfer from my bank to the savings account, and from there create new certificate accounts to fund them from the savings account. All in all, would I go through this hassle again? Actually no.
Oh thanks for letting me know the process. So we actually need to fund the savings first then the CD. It's not normal CD banks that takes the money straight to the CD?

What year is NASA bank system stuck with? Lol

There might be a way to fund the CDs directly, but it wasn't obvious to me. I agree, it seems like NASA is behind the times. The web pages look like they're from the late 90's. LOL

Some more questions on this...once account is approved how is everyone moving funds into nasafcu. Their cs said cannot tf more than 500 bucks (daily) from their app, so have to set it up in the external bank account. The cs and nasafcu page says there is some additional nasa "EPN" number that has to be specified in addition to routing and account numbers for amount to get credited in the right account. And my external bank only asks for routing and account numbers, so where does the EPN fit in? Anybody succeed in doing this from end to end?

Finally, i'm a bit worried about that 500 daily limit. Does that mean if/when you want to get your money out, it has to be done in 500 buck steps?

Might be basic questions but i'm somewhat unfamiliar with these steps...seems a lot more convoluted that what i've encountered.

Find a branch or share branch, deposit a check over the counter. Call CS to create the CD account for you and move the pending amount to it

that's a great idea. just have to find a community union bank in my area, right? and if i do cashier's check, it should be immediately accessible i believe.
that said, all i have is an email approval with account number, no atm card.

What I suggested is how I did to fund and open my CD account. You don't need a cashiers check unless it costs nothing to you. Nasa FCU put a 2 week hold on my check. I called CS and hope they can release the fund earlier for me, the CS just said she can open the CD account and move the pending balance over.

You can find shared branch near you in nasafcu website, make sure it's a shared branch not just co-op atm or atm access, otherwise you can't deposit your check there.

BTW, to find your EPN, go to their website, login, click SERVICES, find it under Checkings & Savings -> EPN Form

which brokerage money market are you referring here?
Advantage of WF 4.55% interest rate are:
1. no minimum deposit required
2. no lock period of your cash like short-term T-bill
3. 0.5% boost (to max of 5.05%) interest rate if sign up from a referral.
4. your cash is liquid and can be withdraw any time.

I have yet to find anything better than WF.
Is WF = Wells Fargo?

Could you expand more about this product? What about the referral.. If Wells Fargo would that be easier if i bank with them already?

oops I see reading back it ain't Wells Fargo bank.

Anyone knows if Wells Fargo has good options on CDS?

Thanks!

Do you know if that offer was extended or if there's currently a similar offer? Best I see otherwise at Citizens is a postcard I got mentioning 4.75% for an 11 month CD with $25k minimum

This is actually a pretty accurate representation. When you're sending stuff to space, you want things that are reliable and have a proven track record. The side effect of that is the result doesn't look futuristic.

I am looking to put 300k in a CD. I would not need the money for a while. Am I better putting it into a higher interest for a short amount and then moving it somewhere else or should I look for a longer term (even if interest is lower) in case interest rates come back down to earth?
I'd do longer-term, slightly lower interest. Also, keep in mind that only $250k (including any interest earned) is FDIC/NCUA-insured per deposit product/ownership catego... [fdic.gov], so split that between two different banks, and aim to end up with <$250k in each at the end of the term.
