That's generally at the lowest storage. The 256GB air and 512GB pro (I think?) have this issue, but they're not truly slower. They're faster at the vast majority of tasks, just a little slower in one use case (large file transfer).

Now, is the M2 worth the extra $200 for literally just 30% performance (at least on the pro…the air has more changes)? That's up to you.

I'd say wait for the M6. Seriously though, the M2 line just came out. I hasn't even been a year.

Some Youtube videos talk about how M2 is worse than M1 laptops. Are there any solid reasons to still buy an M2 laptop?

I believe this refers mostly to the base M1 vs base M2, not the 'pro' versions.

I actually think it's true for the base M2 pro as well, but could be wrong. Still, not a large use case imo

According to testing, if you dont already own an M1 based Mac, then its worth buying unless you have a Mac Pro prior to the apple chips. If you already own an M1, it may be worth holding off to see whats next, as performance increases are there, but marginal.

The M2 Pro 512GB has a slower SSD vs the M1 Pro 512GB - it's probably nothing most people will notice but if you're exporting a lot of stuff it might actually end up where the M1 Pro is somewhat faster.

Otherwise the single and multi-core scores are about a 20% bump.

The problem is, this makes the decision of going with the M2 Pro a little less of an obvious clear upgrade. So when the M1 Pro goes on sale for $1300 Apple refurbished like it did on Woot you gotta really wonder if that $450 from the $1750 price is worth it (probably not).

I'm kicking myself or missing the woot deal!

But as far as I remember, Woot deal was $1400?

Probably worth the wait till WWDC, if M3 Macbooks are out then this price can go even lower...?

It was $1400 but Slickdeals also had cashback for 20% (Max $100) so became $1300 basically.

M1 Pro 512GB version had a faster SSD compared to M2 Pro 512GB version. The difference is significant, but most people wont notice the difference. M1 Pro clocked nearly 5000MB/sec read performance vs M2 Pro's nearly 3000MB/sec. That speed difference makes any noticeable difference only when you edit multiple 4K/8K videos. If someone says they can see the difference in day-to-day use, you are talking to the Terminator Smilie

Here is an article that describes the difference:

That was for refurbished/open-box M1 Pro. M2 Pro may have touched 1699 at some point, but 1799 seems to be the more standard "deal". This price ($1749) is more uncommon, although I have seen it multiple times.
#edit - never mind, I see you were talking about M1 Pro itself.

My wife is a die-hard Mac user who does graphic design work (Adobe programs). Will she have any trouble migrating to Apple silicon? I don't think there are any programs that she uses on her computer other than Safari/Chrome and Adobe software.

She should be fine by now. We early adopted to Apple Silicon knowing that it may have issues, but the Adobe suite runs fine as well as Chome/Safari.
