Synology doing their best Apple impression, under-spec'ing expensive hardware and charging way too much to put in what should be there already.

2g or 10g nics should be in all of their products by now. Just greedy.

Agreed. 2.5G should be a standard for NAS devices.

And they make these modules with weird interface not a regular PCIe slots so you have no choice but to buy theirs. My Qnap can use any of those surplus dual 10g cards for $20 a piece. https://www.ebay.com/itm/155509672131

Qnap owners get a dual 10g for $20 while Synology owners are so happy with a single 10g for $110. It's crazy.

Pure greed indeed

I have synology and like it.

Maybe I'm mistaken but aren't most users for home/small businesses and unlikely to be able to really use over 1gig?

Still it really doesn't cost more to include 2.5 now a days.
1 gig is 125 MB/s, that's HDD territory.

SSD is 500 MB/s, just as a reference.

i am sure HDD speed can fit a lot of people's use case, but it is not that fast by any means. espeically if you are in a small business environment where a lot of people accessing it.

They can nickel and dime because I feel in the majority of the nas spaces they compete in overall they come up on top.

I went with Synology even though I know they charge a premium for their hardwar and want $$$ for upgrades. I bought the base hardware, stick my own memory in there, deal with their nag message, and get on with life.

Wish this worked in the 2020 series models. At least with SMB Multichannel being enabled on DSM 7.2 you can get a speed increase for free.

I agree. Although I don't need it now (my network is all 1 GbE), it would be nice to know that it can be future-proofed. That said, I'm keeping my ds920+ for the foreseeable future... then it might turned into an offsite backup unit.

I don't quite get this. I have a now-10-year-old DS413 that seems to have 10GbE. Are newer synologies not shipping with a 10GbE NIC by default, or is this some other flavor to 10GbE that somehow outperforms what I already have?

EDIT: I see that OP mentioned a ds1522 which I guess has 1GbE stock NIC. That seems ridiculous. This almost definitely isn't compatible with my old NAS so it's not for me. I do have a bottleneck on my DS413 but I think it's the processor, not the NIC.
