I was just at Kroger and bought 2 of the OXO ones. They were on sale for 6.79 and BOGO 50% off.

Ironically, you've downgraded. That "safety plate" is actually a critical step in "snapping" the slices into separate pieces, lacking in the OP item.

I have this [amazon.com] one that slices smaller and works well, but I wanted bigger slices. In 4 1

"Critical" is a big exaggeration. You just grab the piece and pull it up and it'll cut the last bit of skin underneath off (if there's any).

Personally I don't really like these as they always seem to leave a bit of the core in the middle of the slices that I have to further remove and they core out a bit of the edible part of the apple at the top and bottoms. The wasted edible part is minor and not that big of a deal, but having to remove the extra bits after slicing kinda kills the appeal of this, to me at least

I didn't remember having the core problem with the one I linked to.
In fact, I remember being really impressed about how well it worked.
That hinged plate does help tremendously more than I thought it would.

I just run it through under the faucet. The pressure usually gets most of those small pieces off the blades.

The safety piece is actually pretty important. Not for safety but to actually get the blade to go all the way through the apple.

As for the middle core, the diameter is pretty small. For the one I linked at least, not sure of the others since I'm not going to buy a duplicate if I don't have to lol

I have the OP version and the other smaller pieces with closing lid. They both have their purposes.

The more blade cutter is a bit harder to use, especially on slightly lopsided apples. I find it best when sharing with others.

The OP one works fine as the pieces are large enough to pull through if they don't completely cut off.

Either way, it changes Apple eating as you can sort of leave the apple out and graze on it while walking through the kitchen.

When the apple core is stuck after cutting just break it off and push the tiny bit stuck in there out with a pointy object. Definitely do not try to push it out with your thumb. Somehow I though that was ok to do and needed Stiches in my thumb. Lesson learned
