Can someone explain the benefit of this over a traditional smoke detector? Is it just that you can get notified while out?
2023-05-15:
note that $100 sold and shipped by Walmart at above link is dead. I do see a third party seller at $100 though - but personally I wouldn't buy from third party on Walmart site, ymmv.

All the smoke detectors work together. If you have a fire in the basement then all smoke alarms will sound and you can have it say there is smoke detected in the basement

Like another said, they communicate and tell you where the issue is noticed at. And almost even nicer, they don't instantly go off out of nowhere at full volume. They have a calm chime and then a human voice tells you what's going on, and only if it's not acknowledged fairly quickly does it proceed to full bore blaring alarm. Can't tell you how incredibly nice this is when something gets burned, or someone accidentally turns a humidifier up too high lol.
Two other (potentially more niche) benefis are that they will detect motion and display a nice "path light" during the night, and they will also occasionally relay this activity data to a Nest learning thermostat, which helps it learn your habits and when the house needs temp maintained vs. when it can let it fluctuate a little. The hardwired ones are technically superior in this regard as they will relay the motion data more frequently, but otherwise the models are identical last I checked. Basically best bet is to just stick with what you already have (wired or battery powered) if you're replacing existing units.
Since Nest stopped integrating as nice and easy with third party apps and services, I am not as big a fan as I once was. That being said, I've had these in my last two houses and no one else (to my knowledge) makes a smoke/CO monitor system that's so well thought out and seemless, and so my new house will have these too. They're just awesome.

Also if it is connected to your home network you can get notifications on your phone if there's an emergency without having to actually be home. I have three and they all talk to each other.
Have 11 of these, 1 battery and 10 wired. Setup was a pain, every time I installed a new one, had to reset and do a test on all previously installed… Since then been working flawlessly though, no false alarms or anything.
Like the path light and does a self test each month. Had a small fire, worked perfectly. Warned us when smoke was detected and that alarm would go off in a few seconds. Put out fire but a lot of smoke, so fire department came out to air out the house. Was nice to be able to look at the app and be notified as the smoke in each room cleared.
Downside for some is that they have a built in microphone to do the self testing… privacy issue for some.

Do they still will not work with any other brands, so you have to have ALL smoke detectors 100% Nest protect?
