Dude have you seen the price of copper wire? I am looking at $300 in wire!!! It cost $120 to run a 240 and install cutoff, outlet, and all last time. Bare copper still cheap but add the insulation and the price increases 10X. Why?
I'm an early adopter/supporter of this company. I have 2 wifi connected EVSE's from them. Their recent move to a new app platform has left older devices like mine essentially a dumb non-wifi EVSE now. Numerous requests and correspondence with their tech support have been useless. Now they just ignore my emails.
I would not buy their wifi connected devices.
Hard pass. This gen sucks, went through 3 on my utility companies EV pilot. Get a ClipperCreek if you don't need the smart features... Chargepoint if you do.
Don't have an electric car, but why can't I just plug the car to a 240 outlet?
That's essentially what these do, but in a safe way. If you just had a constantly live 40a 240v extension cord coiled up, that would be a big safety issue for a lot of reasons. Think of this as a 240v extension cord with a lot of safety controls built in to prevent issues like cuts/shorts in the cable, the car drawing more amperage than your circuit allows, arcing when plugging in, etc etc. The charging cable is only energized after the plug is fully connected to the car, and the cable and car have each communicated their capabilities to determine a safe charge rate. Some (like this one) also offer smart features for charge scheduling, energy usage monitoring etc.
I bought one as a spare a while ago- it was almost free after the utility rebate. It has the thickest and stiffest cable, not convenient to drag around (I need to charge two cars).

I'm not in the industry... but this sounds to me like a case of "profit" inflation... inflation because the company wants more profit.
