I like the idea of collecting them, and leaving them in the box. I recently found a reddit post that suggested to buy blank NFC cards and program them yourself. I bought a pack which arrive today, so hopefully I'll get the best of both worlds.

I was able to scan the ocarina of time link amiibo (2023 reprint) through the box. They are a bit tricky though. You have to use the joycon (pro controller didn't work) and you have to force it into the bottom of the box a bit. It may make some crush/crease marks on the plastic if you do it enough times.

Do whatever helps you enjoy them the best! It is a toy after all. Don't let other people's perception keep you from opening it up.

Yup. We just got a collector's edition TOTK with in-store pickup and it had some dents in the box even that way! To add some more salt to the wound, they put their receipt sticker right on the front of the box. Thankfully, I was able to gently lift it off leaving only a slight sheen, but mannn. I don't blame the employees who are just doing their jobs as usual, but BB the store should have different shipping/handling procedures in place for gift-box/collector/fragile items.

Does anyone know if this will work on Breath of the Wild? My 12 year old is playing TOTK, but my 10 year old is still working his way through BOTW, and wanted to buy an amiibo, but the ones I see for BOTW are a lot more expensive

I had the same problem with my Best Buy Amiibo order. I should have ordered it for in store pickup. Oh well, I opened mine and there wasn't any damage to the Amiibo itself.

This, 100%. NFC tags are cheap and you can program them with your phone and a free app. Don't pay $15 for a pirate card when you could get dozens of blank NFC for the same price.

Right?! I just started collecting the Zelda ones and cracked them open right away. Can't imagine keeping them in those big boxes
