Would wood mulch make sense here? Cover up the areas around the mondo grass, but leaving enough room around each planting to allow for propagation. I'll still have to weed within a few inches of each planting, but at least the majority of the area will be covered by mulch and not have weeds.
Seems rubber mulch isn't as good a choice for this application, as I'd need to cover less area with mulch each year as the mondo grass spreads. So if I went with rubber mulch, I'd have to pick up some of the rubber mulch each year.
I've found that the rubber mulch keeps weeds at bay better. Feels better to walk on also - if you do walk on it.
However, they do wash away like regular mulch and just hurts to see it. At least rubber mulch will disintegrate and disappear. The rubber mulch that goes out sort of just looks messy.

It's rubber, I'm sure it does last longer. But why you want rubber in your garden, I do not know.
