It has a heavy clear-ish polyurethane or something on it, I tried sanding mine off and the coating was tough as nails. I ended up using a plane to fix my sanding mess and get it down to wood. I would not use it in a kitchen even after that because I don't know what they used to glue it all together.

Thanks for whoever down voted my comment, I'm sure you had a good reason. Maybe share it with the rest of the class so we can all learn from whatever I did wrong, and I can avoid doing it in the future.

A fullsize workbench is on sale at sams for 220 that includes the legs too. It's the same wood used (rubber wood).

Is this acceptable to use as butcher block style countertops? Will it stain and seal properly or is it already Husky thin lacquered?

This thing is great! Used to build a breakfast bar and has held up for 1 1/2 years of daily use no prob. Very sturdy. No sagging with legs with no cross support. Worth it at full price. This is a steal…

That's what I'm using it for. It's not a food-safe coating, so I plan on not preparing food directly on its surface. I don't want to go through the trouble of removing an already strong and waterproof coating.

Hmm, i have one of those 2x4basics workbench kits that most people complete with 2x4s and OSB or whatever. Would this work instead of an osb/plywood surface?

For those interested in using this type of solid wood top, here's another option from home depot for slightly less (and with different length options)

3/4" plywood then top it with a 1/4" hardwood ply. Replace the 1/4" top as needed once you wear it out. Works great
