I bought it at $39.99 when it first came out. The card playmat is suuuuuper cute. The pull rate is not that good for me. But overall I'm satisfied with the cute playmat and promo cards. Now it's $27.49 @Target, I think it's a great deal.

The build and battle stadiums would be a better choice for getting started, you get enough for two playable decks and a lot of boosters to open. The battle decks are a cheaper option with no boosters but a complete deck that's supposedly balanced with other battle decks.

So for those who are collecting and want this specifically this is a good deal for them. If you specifically like opening packs with the hopes of getting a good pull from the set, this comes down to just over $5 per pack. Which is about the cost of a regular pack. This is a great deal as far as buying the set, but as far as buying packs go, it's basically retail.

Booster packs used to be $4. I heard they raised it to like $5 each or close to $5.

I only started about 1 month ago also. I personally play Pokemon Go game, so I like to just collect those cute Pokemon cards. If you are lucky, you can pull some really expensive card ($100, $200+) to add to your collection. OR you can play the card game, I'm not familiar with that part. I think you can try out online. It is free to try it out. For physical cards, there is a basic set to start with ($19.99 reg price and sometime on sale for 14.99 or $9.99). Hope it helps~

I bought the 'Battle Academy' set for about $20 at GameStop when my kids and I learned to play. The free online game helps learn the rules the most though.
