poor value considering rog ally using essentially the same cpu die is only 180$ higher.
Does ROG Ally come with 2 USB-C and 4 USB-A and an Ethernet port?

barebone systems do not come with any operating system because there is no hard drive. Even if they give you a link to download windows 11, it won't have a license key.
It's embedded in the BIOS. I installed Windows 11 Pro and it showed up as activated. I have the NAB6

I bought the um733 barebones, installed my own ram and ssd. Installed win10 pro which automatically activated once online. Maybe win11 is more strict when it comes to activation?
For these barebone units, you need to download the wifi drivers on another computer/USB and install prior to Windows 11 (at the partition screen where you are selecting drive for install).

Windows 11 won't even let you get through installation without access to wifi.

Say what now? On a barebone unit? I installed Windows 11 Pro and it's saying it needs a key.

They are $14 for a Windows 11 Pro license on digital chill mart (discount code ZachDiscord or w/e else the bee extension gives ya).

I have never seen a barebone laptop
There actually are, for example, the Clevo barebones in the old days. There were a ton of rebranded ones available. These companies basically purchased the barebones and added some RAMs and drives themselves. Now this barebone role is taken over by Tongfang PC. Many gaming laptops are a rebrand of these Tongfang laptops.

8. Does the UM790 Pro have pre-installed Windows?
Except for the barebones version, all versions come with Windows 11 Pro pre-installed. The barebones version does not include RAM and SSD; therefore, it does not have pre-installed Windows 11 Pro.

9. How do I install Windows OS for the barebones version?
Please click the link to our support page below to download Windows 11.
Note: Minisforum does not offer keys for the Windows OS.

I like the way you think because I had the same thought as well, however upon further inspection I discovered that the APU Z1 extreme is equalvalent to the 7840U. This is a 7940HS APU with an AI Engine.
The ROG ALLY can be docked but because by nature it is a handheld, it is limited by its 30ish wattage. This UM790 PRO is a SFF PC therefore can be pushed further to 65ish wattage in which case more power. Lets also not forget the AI engine that it is equipped with.
That being said, because both APU devices are equipped with an 780m IGPU, I think both will offer similar results when it comes to gaming. As for productivity, the UM790 PRO might have a slight edge. We'll just have to wait for more benchmarks to see.
The ALLY is $699 with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM and 512GB SSD 2230 M.2(pricier to upgrade compared to 2280 m.2). This UM790 is $519 barebone but can be upgraded to 16GB RAM($80) and 512GB SSD 2280 m.2($50) for no more than $130 making this $639(might even be cheaper if there are better deals out there). But in all honesty, I would rather have 32GB RAM Crucial($103 Amazon) and 2TB SSD Crucial P3 plus($104 Amazon) for $207 plus $519 UM790 for a grand total of $726(more or less depends on your config).
Different strokes for different folks, by the end of the day it's really up to your use cases. But if you ask me, if you game 70% and work 30% get the ROG ALLY(btw, 512GB isn't big enough for games nowadays) but if productivity is 60% and gaming is 40% is your thing then by all means this deal is hard to pass up. These SFF PC can literally be mounted to the back of your monitor.

Wouldn't the latency and speed of the ram assuming it's 5600mhz CL40'plus stronger cpu performance help the gpu performs better?

Apparently you must not be in the the custom laptop business. I have had quite a few over the last year.

I picked up the UM773 and installed Win 11 Pro and it was not activated - used a cheap key. If I had more time I would have tried Win 10 Home / Win 10 Pro / Win 11 Home to see if any of those combinations worked, but it wasn't worth my time.

Pre-ordered the NPB7 on their site over a month ago. They started selling them in stock on Amazon while making excuses saying they are being manufactured for pre-orders. Showed them the link, and they couldn't come up with a good excuse so they refunded.

correct but there are workarounds...for now...

>On the "Oops, you've lost internet connection" or "Let's connect you to a network" page, use the "Shift + F10" keyboard shortcut.
>In Command Prompt, type the OOBE\BYPASSNRO command to bypass network requirements on Windows 11 and press Enter.
>The computer will restart automatically, and the out-of-box experience (OOBE) will start again.
