This is part deal post and part rant. My favorite diet sodas are Diet Pepsi (#1) and Coke Zero (#2), with Diet Coke (#3) bringing up the rear when either of the first 2 are not available on sale. Well, lately, I don't know if you've noticed, but Coke and Pepsi have absolutely sky-rocketed, and not only that, they're rarely even on any *real* sale. I used to be able to buy 4 for $5 or at least 3 for $5, locally. Now, regular price is up to $2.68 at Aldi, and about the same at Walmart, with some other stores such as Target and CVS hitting over $3 per 2 liter. Outrageous!

At any rate, Sam's Diet is not as good as Diet Pepsi (or Coke Zero or Diet Coke, for that matter), but it's actually fairly good, and at only $1.18 per 2L - it tastes a lot better.

Maybe so, but Diet Pepsi also wasn't $3 a 2L at the beginning of the year, either…

Ya know, I love how everyone DV's this deal, but rather than DV'ing, why doesn't somebody offer a damn alternative? If you've never tried it, and you don't have an alternative that is a close or better deal, then why DV it???

It's just lazy to DV a deal but have nothing else to offer. I'm fine if people think a Buck Eighteen is a shit deal, but damnit, tell me what the alternative is. I'd prefer Diet Pepsi or Coke Zero, but I'm not paying $3 a 2L for it.

Holy crap it went that high.. I've been on Panera beverage subscription to avoid having access to soda all the darn time
I'd hardly pay the 58 cents it used to cost

Do you live at or next to the store? How much time and cost is it for you to fill your sippy cup?

It is a mile from my job, but I don't want to have access to soda all the time for dietary reasons.. I haven't bought soda in a long time is what I'm saying so I'm surprised it went this high

Okay, you're missing the point of SD. Not everything has to be some type of fake sale. I posted a deal for food grade mineral oil (used for conditioning wood cutting boards) and it went FP at full/regular price. It went FP, because Target (and Walmart) were selling food grade mineral oil at a fraction of everyone else. Things can be a great deal, even if they're not on sale.

So, back to the point of my OP - this is $1.18 and Coke and Pepsi are selling at $2.68 + per 2L. So, the regular price of this is less than HALF of Coke and Pepsi. Also, if you read my OP, in the past, regular price didn't matter much because somebody ALWAYS had Coke or Pepsi on sale. Even the worst sales were usually 3 for $5. Now, however, I'd beg for a 3 for $5 deal. Nobody has sales on it, almost ever. It was so bad that I bought 2 Diet Pepsis at CVS for a Buy One Get One for 50%... but the regular price was something like $3.38 per 2L! I ended up paying over $2.50 per 2L... and that was the friggin' "sale" price.

So, back to the point... if you find a good deal on RC Cola, Faygo, Summit (an Aldi brand) or whatever and it tastes anywhere close to Coke or Pepsi, then please feel free to respond with a link and a price.

Thank you for what you've done because this is exactly what I've been looking for. People need to calm down. I'm giving a thumbs up because I couldn't bring myself to buy two 2 liters for $5 at Walgreens today.

I cant believe how expensive soda has got. Yea I drink a lot less of it now, but more of the beer instead.. Dam near the same price!. Is the price increase simple inflation? IDK, but it seems way out of whack compered to other items. Could there be a new sugar tax we don't know about?

Appreciate that, thanks. Also, I was thinking that I'd drink RC Cola instead of Sam's, but there is no RC Cola in diet, so I did a quick google search. I was a bit surprised to see that Walmart actually sells 2L bottles of RC Diet Cola for only $1.48! So, I did a quick check to see which Walmarts in my area carry it... and... NADA! Not a Walmart in probably 100 miles of me (or more) carries RC Diet.

I'm not sure which stores Walmart sells this stuff at, but at $1.48 per 2L (see link, below), if it tasted better than the Sam's, I'd buy it in a heartbeat at only 30 cents more than the Sam's Diet. That said, Sam's Diet is "close enough" given that its price is 56% cheaper than Walmart's $2.68 price for Diet Pepsi or Coke Zero.

It appears to be a combination of factors. Yes, inflation can be blamed for a small increase in price given delivery costs have increased, bottling costs have increased, in ingredient costs have increased... but damn, if Walmart can sell their own Sam's variant for $1.18, and as I mentioned above, RC Diet is only $1.48 per 2L, then both Pepsi and Coke are taking advantage of things and making a profit grab. They know a lot of us are addicted to the stuff, and they corner a large percentage of the market... so, they're rolling the dice to see just how much consumers will pay.

In economics, there's the concept called "price elasticity" and the "substitution effect." The price of Pepsi and Coke is fairly elastic, meaning we'll all pay more for it to get it... but at some point, many of us are going to start substituting Pepsi and Coke for other brands and other drinks (such as ginger ale or iced tea). I think I've reached my point.

seems to be a stupid tax.

I might suggest tea sweetened with almond milk as a much cheaper substitute..

assuming you make the tea yourself.

Is anyone else here diabetic and notice even the diet/zero colas still spike glucose? The nerve damage from diabetes sucks, I advise you all to cut out this cola crap. I'm not judging, just warning. Sucks to go through this, but i'm healing up well and i'm back down to pre-diabetic levels.
