For me, the primary reason is for the downloadable maps. This is especially helpful when you are on a trail without cell service, and are at an multi-point intersection not knowing which is the correct route (sometimes trail markers aren't all that clear/obvious, or perhaps it's too early and you're not fully awake yet laugh out loud). I've tried to get away with the free version of AllTrails, and trekked down the wrong path once. Needless to say, I subscribed to AllTrails Pro after the 3-mile detour back to the parking lot.

At regular price, GAIA GPS is a much better navigation app for me with much better maps, stats, etc. I do enjoy trail reviews on AllTrails, especially recent conditions. I would pay $18 for AllTrails just for that but not the full price. Unfortunately, I do have an active subscription and so this deal will not work for me.

I actually use both. AT is much more user friendly and nice for easy weekend warrior trails where you're not actually worried about getting lost in the middle of nowhere.

For serious backcountry route finding I only trust GAIA. That actually saved our butt once in backcountry Utah when we got so turned around at night that even our hired guide was lost. Fortunately despite hiring the guide I downloaded the route to GAIA and was able to get our bearings. Needless to say the guide refunded us our fee, lol.

I used the alltrails app on a hike and it drained 70% of my battery life with my phone screen off during the day because it stayed running even after I finished the trail. It did not stop draining my battery until I force stopped the app and cleared its data. Not sure if there are better trails apps or I have to change some setting in this app to fix.

Identical issue here. I'll try their support but I have no luck with any support team helping the "sales dept" … silly but most companies operate this way not realizing one supports the other.

Hopefully AllTrails is different

I grabbed this the other day and used it yesterday for biking. I downloaded the maps in advance but didn't need them. The route tracking was pretty cool. The off route alerts didn't work. Got some while on route. Didn't get some while off. The flyover is pointless. Trail distance to me might be the most valuable. It was easy to pick a local place I'd never been. Shame that it's locked up in a premium version. All in all, it's fine for $18/yr. I'd just leave it on auto renewal at that price. But at $36/yr I wouldn't renew. Enjoy.

This sub is one of the easiest ways to find good routes by popularity/distance from you and export the GPX route to other apps.

I use WorkoutDoors on Apple Watch and it's a great combo with this. Tbh I imported most of the trails I needed last time I subbed but subbing again will encourage me to find new trails.
