For me, the primary reason is for the downloadable maps. This is especially helpful when you are on a trail without cell service, and are at an multi-point intersection not knowing which is the correct route (sometimes trail markers aren't all that clear/obvious, or perhaps it's too early and you're not fully awake yet laugh out loud). I've tried to get away with the free version of AllTrails, and trekked down the wrong path once. Needless to say, I subscribed to AllTrails Pro after the 3-mile detour back to the parking lot.
Turn off auto-renew if you don't want to renew at full price at the end of one year.

How do I turn off auto-renew for my subscription?:

Found option to "Turn Off Auto-Renew" by going to this link in Android web browser (after login) and scrolling down:

Alltrails is great normal price sucks. They should just set the normal price at $20 and stop with the sales. TU!

Black Friday/cyber Monday offers the same deal. I renew it every year for this price around that time.

If you're interested in this, you might consider checking your library perks. Many counties offer a free membership but YMMV.

Without cell service, does it show where you are on the map?

Of course I have a current sub and that sub will expire a few days before my next planned backpacking trip. Chances are not good I will find a promo in that narrow window, but to be honest I was thinking of trying some other apps out since Alltrails has not been very accurate. I know a bunch of YT are pushing OnX but there are a few other options out there and many offer more features for about the same price. So this might just be the reason I switch.

Yes...with their + sub you can download maps to your phone. Then all you need is a fairly clear shot to the sky for GPS. Sometimes it jumps around a little if you are in a gorge or something but definitely good enough for you to "know" where you are. But the key is downloading the maps before you leave.

What's the reason to subscribe? I use the app occasionally on hikes if I'm unsure about the trail. For those who are paying for it? What's the paid version doing for you that you choose to subscribe?
I like to export the .gpx files so I can add them to my watch and not deal with my phone for navigation on the trail.

I'm shocked apps like this aren't available open-source and for free at this point. It's a fairly simple concept with a ton of competition.

That being said I'm still on the amazing West Virginia Tourism Alltrails Pro 1yr Free deal that was posted not too long ago[?] and have noticed:
  • the social features are the nicest of any similar type app
  • the gps seems to be the most optimized and efficient on battery usage
  • the navigation is fantastic
  • they have fantastic support
  • it's a straightforward and clean UI
I use it for mountain biking primarily and I love how you can navigate based on previous times you've "hiked" a trail and "drop" pictures/POI notes along the way (my favorite feature), leave trail reviews/hints/conditions, etc. It just works too well. I'd like better import and export options, but I'm a big fan and will keep my subscription despite hating subscriptions with a passion.

If you are looking for a free no-frills alternative with better import/export and custom maps, I highly recommend Avenza. If you are a scientist/data geek I recommend Ultra GPS logger (most powerful control of sensor info). If you are a runner Strava is decent in some ways. All I can vouch for is Android versions btw.

had a previous account and membership (like 18 months ago) the APP would not let me add the deal, but on the web with the same credentials it DID, so try that route to upgrade your sub to paid, for 17.99…For that $$ it's worth it to me. The app is good, offline is key, route back is nice, but I didn't really use it enough to warrant $30 a year, but I can give up a few Latte in the next couple months and pay for this sub.

The main reason to pay for this is that you can download the data and it will work out there in the wilderness. Relying on just looking at the current map when you leave the towers behind is taking too much of a chance in my book. Sometimes trails cross terrain that won't actually take a trail, when you're on steep terrain and have lost it it's **very** useful to know whether you should be hunting to the left or the right. I pay for both AllTrails (better for trails) and GaiaGPS (better for overall maps) and have **lot** of data downloaded--pretty much every trail in the areas I frequent except those I know contain obstacles I won't do and topos of pretty much everything within reasonable dayhiking range.

Yes, please make sure you go to their website in order to redeem. Previously I mistakenly upgraded thru the app and ended up paying thru Apple directly where there was no discount. Fortunately, I was able to get Apple to refund me and Alltrails was very helpful in providing me with the discount after the sale period was over. I wouldn't try Google store either for those who were asking, for the same reason.
