Yeah, good catch OP, definitely read those reviews on the tactical hiking boot. People hate the sock opening, from it being incredibly difficult to put on, to it falling apart in just a few months.

Any of them safety toes on clearance?

well I have particular requirements anyway, a boot I think I will last more than 6 months, at least 6 inches so dirt doesn't go in and waterproof. 0 insulation for 100 degree weather. it hard to find all that on any clearance prices. I should just pay a lot I guess.

Hmm, I'm mildly interested in those because they're slip resistant, which is rare here and for Merrells. A slip resistant rating isn't required in my industry and most people I see wear regular hikers or sneakers. I like having it though because you never know what you might run into, and I learned working in the restaurant industry that slip-resistant shoes can be a real life saver, sometimes literally. I'll probably pass due to what you said though, and having plenty of shoes and boots already.

What does tactical actually mean? Is it basically marketing to folks who want to play army? Or does it meet more rigorous standards in terms of longevity?

I own the Moab 2 boots and just ordered another pair (thanks op). Ultimately, they are heavy and not durable. I used them daily for police work and the heel and toes delaminated or tore after 4-5 months. They lost their waterproofness within 8 months (but to be fair I was applying heavy amounts of polish and chemicals to them to make them shine). I'd never pay full price again but for 42 bucks and about a year of use, I'm in. They are comfortable until they fall apart and have decent traction.

Are they zip up on the side like the one a customer pictured or just lace-up?

They have a zipper on the side as well. You can see more pictures on Merrell's website here: https://www.merrell.com/US/en/moab-2-8-inch-tactical-response-waterproof-boot-wide-width/31167M.html... [merrell.com]

I got these boots on sale last time for $122 with one of their promotions around Christmas time. Don't ask me about the comfort however, because I still haven't worn them along with another dozen pairs of shoes I bought during pandemic lock down times.

Still, this is a crazy good deal for $42, so naturally I got another pair that I won't wear.

Zip up. Never had an issue with that aspect of them. I wouldn't tie the shoes after the first time and would solely use the zip up feature to take them on and off. The cloth material inside the shoe that is connected to the zip up part did start coming out of the shoe when taking them off but it never tore and would slide back in when I put them on again.

Thanks OP. I've had the Moab 2's for 4 years and love them. They were $170 back then. $42 for a fresh pair is a no brainer. I'll probably keep them stored for a while because my current set is still in great shape.
