What exactly is the difference between buying one of these and buying a generic name brand one for cheaper? I have a generic one which works perfectly fine, but am genuinely curiously.

Check the specs, like write/read speeds. If these are the same, then the cards will perform more or less the same. I wouldn't buy completely generic brands, though. Stick with Samsung or SandDisk without the Nintendo branding.

Got it, I previously got the Samsung evo for $10 cheaper which runs perfectly fine. Was just wondering for a friend who just got a switch, thanks

Same size, 256GB card for $20.50 ... faster Read/Write speeds.

"Up to 150MB/s transfer speeds to move up to 1000 photos per minute (Up to 150MB/s read speed, engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speed."

At this point I just buy U3 cards for my switch. 512 Samsung U3 Pro Plus is $44 with workplace/edu discount

Up to 180MB/s Read and 130MB/s Write speed with Class 10, V30 and U3 compatibility.
