The Fallout games do a really good job of world building without needing to play prior games for things to make sense. There are common themes and easter eggs but you won't miss anything if you not play a particular game or just play one before you die. Also, every game has a different protagonist so it is not like you are jumping into the middle of a story like The Witcher. I watched the series, played 3, then played 2. I wish I did it in the opposite order as I probably missed so much. On the other hand with Far Cry I mistakenly thought New Dawn was before 5 so I played them in the wrong sequence. Which ended up being kinda cool to do it backwards and see how the same world changed so much. Like traveling back in time. But with FC the narrative is pretty shallow so that might be a bad comparison.

I believe Fallout: New Vegas has been given away on Epic for free before, but this version adds the following DLC add-on packs with new areas, NPCs, quests, weapons, etc:

I'm doing a play through right now for the 10th time. New Vegas is the best 3D fallout game by far- if you haven't played it yet it is absolutely worth your time

thanks so much OP... just grabbed! I'm an Xbox gamer sprinkled with some PS5 on the side. I love my consoles. However I'm planning on getting the Rog Ally.... And now I've been looking out for PC games to download before it arrives. I guess my question is why does it seem like you PC players always have games on mega discounts and for free. it's stand-alone story-wise. game mechanics are nearly identical to FO3 and changed ever so slightly. so if you play one, you'll have an easy time adjusting to the other.

in my opinion, FO3 felt more dark & gloomy (I personally liked the atmosphere better), but FNV felt more open-world.

if you played FO4 already, then the game mechanics are a huge step back, so be warned.
