"In general, you're going to be dealing with either a 1/3HP or a 1/2HP sump pump. A 1/3HP sump pump will be about 600-800 watts while running, with start up watts around 1,300-1,600. Would have to buy the wheel kit, which pushes this up to $300. Would also need an adapter to switch my 50A cable to a 30A plug, probably another $30.
But I can tell you that they usually say that 68db is "quiet" for a higher capacity generator (think 10k watt range), but they consider it loud to average for a lower capacity generator like this one.
It's still the same amount of noise, but I'm sure there are much quieter options for this level of output. I found a Westinghouse inverter in this class that is rated at 52db. It's closer to $1000 though.

It will be quieter than generators from 1990s, which had small garden equipment mufflers. This has a larger, much more effective muffler and a large air filter that quiets intake noise. But otherwise it's very similar, with a direct sound path from the engine cooling fan, exposed engine, and generator head fan.
The next step up is an open frame inverter generator. It will have similar characteristics except for the engine speed. Instead of running at a constant 3600RPM, required to generate 60Hz power, an inverter generator will run the engine to run at the minimum speed needed. The inverter controls the output frequency and voltage, which will be far 'cleaner' (less distorted). This type of generator will be about as loud at full power, but can be significantly quieter and more efficient with lower loads. Since you often need to size the generator for the peak load e.g. starting a motor or pump, most time will be spent at 5-50% load.
The modern standard is fully enclosed inverter generators. They have a plastic shell with sound insulation, baffles and rubber mounts to reduce noise. They usually have carefully designed cooling air paths so that a single engine-driven fan cools the electronics, alternator, engine and muffler. That can result in better cooling, better protection from the elements and higher reliably.
If you are planning on using the generator, it's usually best to get a modern enclosed inverter generator. If it's only as an emergency backup for unplanned events, where noise and high fuel consumption will be secondary concerns, the low cost of a open frame generator is appealing.
