Instead of going artificial, make your own vanilla extract. It's dead simple and only has two ingredients. Will take months but at the end you're left with a crap ton of vanilla extract.

Best to get stuff labeled as "imitation" vanilla that actually lists "vanillin" in the ingredients.

But it doesn't sound like it is really widely used for vanilla flavoring. From the article:

Yea, only two *expensive* ingredients. Neither vodka nor vanilla beans are cheap, so if you go that route, get prepared to invest an arm and leg as well as the time it takes to be ready. I keep a small bottle of pure vanilla on hand, but imitation is fine for most of my uses. Only time I use the pure is if I'm making something where vanilla is the forefront or only flavor profile…: ie: vanilla pudding, sugar cookies, vanilla icecream, etc.
