Looks like generic toner is fairly affordable and doesn't require any tricks to install. Any drawbacks to this?

Not towards this deal but the fact my current Brother laser still works only is a drawback. I'm buying this for the color.

I have had similar printer with different model number for years. I was very disappointed with it and I regretted my purchase very much for years because it had many color issues. All color solutions from YouTube and Brother website only temporarily helped for first 20 pages and the color would mess up again. Last month I noticed there were so many toner powders under 4 toners and I vacuumed all of them. That has solved the problem. I have now loved the printer very much. All 3rd party toners from Amazon work fine with the printer.

I have a higher spec version of this printer and firmware updates mess with 3rd party toner.
Don't upgrade firmware.

Save yourself a headache and buy an Epson, I will never purchase another Brother product in my life after all the problems I had with their printer.

I have an MFC-L3770CDW. It has been a great and reliable printer and now it has problems recognizing generic toners. Not sure what happened but Reddit has some threads on it. I have never updated the firmware. Luckily I have a backup in Dell MFP E525w.

I don't understand how you fixed it, what did you vacuum? How much are 3rd party toners going for?
