What's the real regular price on these? Why do they call them water pump pliers?

It's not the size of the water pump plier you have.... it's how you use it!

These specific ones are usually $32. Knipex makes some really high quality tools.

Water pump pliers by another name are known as channel-lock pliers. They're great for using on plumbing fittings because they're easily adjustable and they have teeth which let you get good grip on pipes and plumbing fixtures.

Just know these are TINY. I have the XS wrench version of this and it was so much smaller than I expected. They are 4 inches in total length from the end of the handle to the end of the head. I use mine in the toolkit I keep on my motorcycle since they are so small and lightweight and they help to grip small things in harder to reach places. I've been wanting to pick up this XS cobra model as well, but only because I have a tool addiction. Tempting…

These are amazing for opening constant tension clamps in tight places. This is a go to piece of kit.

Mine are in my pocket now. Is there any talk of a cover? I have thought about having a tiny leather case to just cover the jaws. The metal is so tough it was turning gold... I.e. it was eating my soft brass keychain.

I have not seen them cheaper than this. Unfortunately they usually are sold more expensively than even some of the larger sizes. I'm a fan of their tools and am jumping on this deal.

Why are they called water pump pliers? Do an image search on "old water pump". The action of these pliers functions much like old water pumps. It's not that they're made for working on water pumps (but funnily enough likely used for it), but that the motion is similar when opening or closing the pliers.

I think they sell the pouch the set comes in for these by its self.

Personally I think the extra inch and the locking mechanism of the 87 01 125 is more useful than this version, YMMV.

Edit: still a solid deal on some good channel locks

Lots of pocket sheath/slip options for these on ETSY. Just search for Cobra XS. One of my most-used tools.
