What are these even for? These are useless in emergencies without power, and they are ridiculously expensive.

What makes you say these are "Useless in emergencies without power"? You could power a full size fridge for like 4 days with this.

You can recharge them with solar panels.

3-5 solar panels would be ideal and that would be easily $1500+ extra...I do want this setup eventually but a deal on compatible solar panels would be amazing!!!

On the product page, it says: "The solar input supports a 11-60V solar charger with an XT-60 connector. If you use a 11-32V charger, the current supports 10A max while a 32-60V charger supports 20A max. "

You can get an XT-60 to MC4 (solar connectors) adapter for less than $10. 100W solar panels can be had for $80 or less. You can connect them in series/parallel to get whatever voltage/amperage you need. Most of those 100W panels will be around 18V. 3 in series to get 54V will give you up to 300W of power at their max of 5.5A. Given the limits of the solar input on this, you can reasonably run 3-4 sets in parallel, giving you between 900-1200W. Maxing it out at 1200W from solar panels would cost less than $1000 (12 panels at $80 = $960), and even that is far more than most people would need or even bother with.

Good for camping for a few days. Allows you to power projectors, charge phones, lights, and small electric appliances.

I don't really understand your comment I think having power during an emergency would be very useful

I think you have the wrong mental pricing for solar panels 100 watt should be less than $100, so 500 to 1,000 w of charging would get you fully charged in about a day and way under $1,500

Check for used residential/commercial panels in your area. They are all over at least in my area. I picked up some Canadian Solar 300w panels for $80/ea a year or 2 ago. Obviously they don't fold up all small and light like some of the fancy ones these type units are often bundled with, but WAY cheaper.

how long will you actually get with this though? I cant see this being able to charge reliably off solar at a constant rate to give power for most things. It would be a neat frivolous device for camping but thats all I can see. even the reviews and spec on amazon say it will only keep a fridge running for about 4 hours on full charge. Solar panels def dont recharge at the same rate of use.

As an example:

Microwave for a couple hours
TV for 40 hours
desktop computer for 10 hours
laptop for 4 hours
refrigerator should go for WAY WAY more than 4 hours. An average fridge is 1-2KWh per day so this should power a fridge between 4-8 days.

With respect to recharging, obviously you need to consider the AVERAGE wattage of your panel array over the course of the day and that depends on the season, where you live, and how you have the panels positioned. However, you could certainly take panels configured to provide 500W average charging power over 8 hours to give you 4000Wh of input (granted this won't be 100% efficient but 80% is reasonable.

In any case it's plausible and not nuts to have this get you through several days of power outage and the ability to roughly recharge in a day if one was so inclined to buy half a dozen 100W (average) panels.

Remember this would buffer intermittent loads such as microwave, refrigerator etc.

It's certainly not going to cool your house in the summer, but it would allow you to get through several days of living, eating, entertaining, cooking, and not spoiling your food.
